{"id":75,"date":"2011-09-18T14:11:55","date_gmt":"2011-09-18T19:11:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/fshorr\/?p=75"},"modified":"2011-09-18T14:11:55","modified_gmt":"2011-09-18T19:11:55","slug":"sports-reporting-it-cant-be-beat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/fshorr\/2011\/09\/18\/sports-reporting-it-cant-be-beat\/","title":{"rendered":"Sports Reporting: it Can&#8217;t be Beat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A free pass to every game&#8230;lots of travel and luxury hotels&#8230;.a credentialed press box seat&#8230;what could be bad?&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>Well, if you, if you work at your craft and don&#8217;t mind putting in the hours, the answer can easily be &#8220;nothing!&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Getting your own beat is a reward&#8230;But \u00a0talk to any veteran whose been doing the job and they&#8217;ll likely point out the dangers and the pitfalls of the job rather than the perks&#8230;It&#8217;s hard work and you earn your stripes&#8230;Whether it&#8217;s baseball that plays every day or football that&#8217;s once a week, you&#8217;re expected to have information no one else does&#8230;and there&#8217;s no rest for the weary, it&#8217;s got to be fresh and you need to be alert&#8230;&#8221;You try during the course of a game to think this is what&#8217;s gonna happen and I&#8217;ll play it off that (when i write) but when things change, you really might have to adjust in a hurry because what you want to write about doesn&#8217;t make much sense&#8221;, so said <em>The Boston Globe<\/em>&#8216;s Peter Abraham at a recent Boston University sports journalism seminar\u00a0&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>And fresh as it may have to be, it sometimes sting&#8230;Not everything will be positive and reporters have come to learn they&#8217;ll hear about it&#8230;Not that it&#8217;s wrong but that the player doesn&#8217;t like it&#8230;And here&#8217;s where you earn a piece of your paycheck&#8230;If you wrote something negative about a player, show up \u00a0and take the heat&#8230;<em>WEEI.com<\/em>&#8216;s Chris Price has been there numerous times and while it&#8217;s not fun, it&#8217;s part of the job; &#8220;If you&#8217;re a beat reporter and you write something like that, it&#8217;s important to be there the next day, they gain a level of respect for you if you can back up your words.&#8221;&#8230;adds Abraham, &#8220;Especially if you&#8217;re gonna see the guy every day, you can&#8217;t make it to a point where you&#8217;re glaring at each other because of something like that, that doesn&#8217;t help you&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re writing, you&#8217;re blogging, you&#8217;re tweeting, maybe you&#8217;re even appearing on the tube &#8230;it&#8217;s part of the job and like any other job, there are rules you need to know&#8230;and oh yeah, if you&#8217;re really good at it, you just might get your picture at the top of the column!&#8230;what could be bad?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A free pass to every game&#8230;lots of travel and luxury hotels&#8230;.a credentialed press box seat&#8230;what could be bad?&#8230;..
