Research Milestones

FIRST YEAR

a. Identify a Section mentor (Oct 1).

b. Certify in human studies research for the IRB (Oct 1).

c. Plan a case report or clinical case series or review.

d. Attend an IRB meeting.

e. Attend a Clinical Trials Program Scientific Review Committee meeting.

g. Through discussion with mentor and training program directors, decide on clinical vs basic research, whether to apply to CREST program, whether to do research at the VA or BMC. Applications to CREST must be reviewed in the Section by April 1 and submitted to the CREST program by June 1.

h. Consider whether to apply for the 4 year Hematology Research Training Program or Molecular Medicine graduate program.

SECOND YEAR

a. Identify a research mentor (may be different from section mentor) and outline plan for research.

b. Do review of relevant literature and a presentation of this in a fellows conference. Applies to basic or clinical research.

c. Submit human studies application if relevant with help of Clinical Trials Program.

d. If clinical trial planned, attend workshop given by ASCO or similar organization.

e. Write model grant proposal toward end of year GREAT IDEA-ARE WE TEACHING THEM TO DO THIS? WHO WILL READ THESE

f. Begin research.

g. Begin CREST coursework if applicable.

h. Apply to Hematology Training Grant (meet with Dr. Lerner).

i. Apply to Molecular Medicine PhD Program.

j. Evaluate option of doing clinical research at the VA for third year.

k. Apply for grant for research support.

THIRD YEAR

a. Project completion.

b. Written report, paper submission.

c. Present research project at Heme-Onc grand rounds.

d. Apply for grant.

e. Attend Cancer Biology & Genetics course lectures.

FOURTH YEAR

a. Fellows in Training Grant program or others who continue an additional transition year using the VA slot for clinical trials research.

b. Prepare manuscripts and submit grants for ongoing funding as junior faculty.
