{"id":166,"date":"2013-06-22T19:24:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-22T23:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/hoochie\/?p=166"},"modified":"2017-10-31T20:13:43","modified_gmt":"2017-11-01T00:13:43","slug":"npr-highlights-the-story-of-an-artist-inviting-social-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/hoochie\/2013\/06\/22\/npr-highlights-the-story-of-an-artist-inviting-social-change\/","title":{"rendered":"NPR highlights the story of an artist inviting social change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sick of street harassment in her neighborhood, <a title=\"Tatayana Fazlalizadeh\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tlynnfaz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tatayana Fazlalizadeh<\/a>\u00a0has been plastering an important message around the city of Brooklyn:\u00a0 Stop harassing women on the streets.\u00a0 We don\u2019t want it.\u00a0 It is offensive.\u00a0 We are not obligated to give men our time or attention<\/p>\n<p>Some men, of course, still don\u2019t believe street harassment is an issue.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony Williams, a featured interviewee, believes street harassment is what he is \u201csupposed\u201d<i> <\/i>to do.\u00a0 It is his right to try to \u201cacquire\u201d an attractive woman he sees.\u00a0 He can say what he pleases to her in hopes of her reciprocation.<\/p>\n<p>These are the men Tatayana Fazlalizadeh is targeting with her socially conscious art.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Interestingly though, one of the most upvoted comments on this article, by a man, asserts that all men are not like Anthony Williams.\u00a0 But Tatayana isn\u2019t targeting the \u201cgood guys\u201d out there.\u00a0 So why is such a comment relevant?<\/p>\n<p>Of course, not all men think they are supposed<i> <\/i>to harass women about their appearances.\u00a0 And not all men believe women are objects to be acquired.<\/p>\n<p>To those men who wouldn\u2019t think of partaking in street harassment, we sincerely appreciate it.\u00a0 We are glad that you are disgusted that others of your gender would be so inconsiderate and offensive.
