{"id":4,"date":"2009-08-05T00:50:45","date_gmt":"2009-08-05T04:50:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/ieee\/?page_id=4"},"modified":"2026-05-01T11:57:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T15:57:22","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/ieee\/","title":{"rendered":"Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment13\" style=\"width: 518px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment13\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Photonics Research Center at Boston University\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/ieee\/files\/2009\/08\/8.jpg\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13 \" width=\"508\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/ieee\/files\/2009\/08\/8.jpg 635w, https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/ieee\/files\/2009\/08\/8-300x151.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment13\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photonics Research Center at Boston University<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>BU IEEE<\/strong> <strong>is the combined \u201cIEEE Student Chapter\u201d and \u201cIEEE-HKN Kappa Sigma Chapter\u201d at Boston University <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Overview<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBU IEEE Student Chapter\u201d together with \u201cBU IEEE-HKN Kappa Sigma Chapter\u201d is called \u201cBU IEEE\u201d with Professor Min-Chang Lee as the current Faculty Advisor.\u00a0 &#8220;BU IEEE Student Chapter&#8221; has been tied to IEEE Boston Section where Professor Lee serves as the Chair for &#8220;Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT)&#8221; and the Chair for &#8220;Nuclear and Plasma Science Society (NPSS) &#8221; as well as a member on the &#8220;Professional Education and Development (PED) Committee&#8221;.\u00a0 But, &#8220;BU IEEE-HKN&#8221; was originally evolved from &#8220;BU HKN&#8221;, which was established by Professor Lee in 2001, when HKN was created and managed by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).\u00a0\u00a0 After HKN became IEEE-HKN several years ago, Boston University\u2019s HKN was reinstated as \u201cKappa Sigma Chapter of IEEE-HKN\u201d in 2016. \u00a0\u00a0Since 2016 the \u201cBU IEEE-HKN and BU IEEE Student Chapter\u201d have been combined and registered at Boston University\u2019s Student Activities Office (SAO) as \u201cBU IEEE Student Chapter\/IEEE-HKN\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BU IEEE Membership<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BU IEEE Student Chapter offers General Membership to ECE Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors.\u00a0 The activities include invited lectures from outside speakers (including BU alumni\/alumnae), workshops, social activities (e.g., welcome party), tutoring of ECE courses.\u00a0\u00a0 According to the guidelines from IEEE-HKN as an Honor Society (click on the website given below to see the IEEE-HKN operational manual), BU IEEE-HKN members need to meet the criteria, including their GPAs.\u00a0 \u00a0In other words, not all BU IEEE Student Chapter Members are automatically awarded the BU IEEE HKN Membership. \u00a0 \u201cBU IEEE Student Chapter\/IEEE-HKN\u201d has been supported financially by BU ECE Department to cover the costs of aforementioned activities in addition to the Induction Fees for BU IEEE-HKN members.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hkn.ieee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/HKN-Ops-Manual-Approved-by-EAB-7-April-2018.pdf\">https:\/\/hkn.ieee.org \u203a HKN-Ops-Manual-Approved-by-EAB-7-April-2018<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Features of BU IEEE Website <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our site contains updated information about the student chapter, upcoming and past events, general meetings and e-board members.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome incoming Class of 2029 and welcome back continuing students and members.
