{"id":387,"date":"2022-05-11T12:07:56","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T16:07:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/khcblog\/?p=387"},"modified":"2022-05-11T12:07:56","modified_gmt":"2022-05-11T16:07:56","slug":"studying-abroad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/khcblog\/2022\/05\/11\/studying-abroad\/","title":{"rendered":"Studying Abroad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spencer Morgan (CFA&#8217;23)<\/p>\n<p>I have always wanted to study abroad; the ability to do so was one of the major deciding factors for me during my college search and selection process.\u00a0 Interestingly, I am now part of an academic program that requires students to study abroad, such is the importance of expanding one\u2019s world view to my college. I feel that my experience, so far, has done exactly that: my perspectives on place, identity, and culture have all be broadened while attending school, going to work, and traveling around one of the greatest cities in the world: London.<\/p>\n<p><strong>School<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the academic portion of my program, I decided to focus on history and art, which has meant taking classes on foreign policy, societal change, and of course contemporary and modern art.\u00a0 I have not only been able to see some wonderful special exhibitions, unique monuments, and moving performances as a result of these classes, but in taking them have nearly completed a declared minor in History and possibly another in the History of Art and Architecture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Work<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the internship portion of my program, I was paired with the City of Westminster Archives\u2019 Conservation Department.\u00a0 Over the course of the past few weeks, I have joined a small cohort of volunteers in mounting, framing, and packaging objects in preparation for a special exhibition, \u2018Life in Victorian Westminster\u2019.\u00a0 It has been a wonderful introductory experience to the field, re-affirming my desire to go into the heritage sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Travel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In my free time, I made a point of going out in the city to explore the numerous museums, parks, and other points of interest.\u00a0 I also traveled on most weekends to other towns, like Brighton, Kirkwall, and Dover, and major cities, like Edinburgh, York, Liverpool, and Bath.<\/p>\n<p>I always knew that I was going to study abroad, but I could never have anticipated doing so during a pandemic.\u00a0 I admit that there were challenges \u2013 travel restrictions, isolation requirements, and other necessary protocols \u2013 that made the experience different than what I had imagined going into college.\u00a0 However, different doesn\u2019t mean bad; I had an incredible time and was able to make some fantastic memories with some wonderful people.<\/p>\n<p>I left London with a broadened world view and a new zest for life that I know will stay with me for many years to come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spencer Morgan (CFA&#8217;23) I have always wanted to study abroad; the ability to do so was one of the major deciding factors for me during my college search and selection process.\u00a0 Interestingly, I am now part of an academic program that requires students to study abroad, such is the importance of expanding one\u2019s world view &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/khcblog\/2022\/05\/11\/studying-abroad\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Studying Abroad<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8413,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[150],"tags":[45,39,30,129],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/khcblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/387"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/khcblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/khcblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/khcblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/8413"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/khcblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=387"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/khcblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/387\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":388,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/khcblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/387\/revisions\/388"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/khcblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=387"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/khcblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=387"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/khcblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=387"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
