Thanos’s PMP Exam Journey

In our recent interview, we had the pleasure of speaking with Thanos, a newly certified Project Management Professional (PMP). Thanos shared his journey, challenges, and strategies that led to his success in passing the PMP exam. Here’s a detailed look at his experience and valuable advice for aspiring PMPs.

The Challenge of Choosing the Right Answer

One of the most challenging aspects of the PMP exam for Thanos was selecting the right answer. “It might sound obvious, but many answers are quite similar. Usually, there’s one that’s clearly wrong, and then three that could be plausible. Often, two answers sound almost exactly the same,” Thanos explained. He found that the key was distinguishing between vague answers and those that took specific steps, as well as identifying project management terminology versus more generic language.

Effective Time Management

Managing time during the exam was crucial. Thanos detailed, “You have around 230 to 240 minutes for about 180 to 200 questions, close to four hours, which is a little over a minute per question. Spending too much time on one question can waste valuable time for others.” His strategy involved flagging difficult questions and moving on, then using breaks strategically to maintain focus and stamina.

Utilizing Helpful Study Materials

When it came to study materials, Thanos emphasized the importance of the PMBOK Guide, particularly the agile and Scrum sections. He also highlighted the value of classes covering project communications, leadership, and risk management. “Scenario-based questions are common, so understanding these key concepts thoroughly was crucial,” he noted. Additionally, online resources, such as comprehensive video sessions on YouTube, proved highly beneficial.

Effective Study Techniques

Thanos admitted to cramming but recommended a structured study schedule. “Starting early with the PMBOK Guide and progressively reviewing material while making comprehensive notes helped solidify my understanding. By the final days before the exam, I focused solely on reviewing rather than learning new material,” he shared. This approach proved effective in reinforcing key concepts.

Practicing Sample Questions and Mock Exams

Thanos made extensive use of a dedicated PMP preparation book that included comprehensive sample tests, helping him delve deeper into PMBOK Guide concepts. He also found online platforms with question-solving sessions, like those hosted by Andrew Ram Daya on YouTube, to be instrumental in familiarizing himself with exam-style questions and scenarios.

Managing Stress During the Exam

Managing stress was crucial for Thanos, especially given the length of the PMP exam. “Utilizing breaks effectively by getting up, moving around, and staying hydrated helped maintain focus and prevent mental fatigue,” he said. He tackled tough questions by initially skipping them and returning later with a refreshed perspective.

Reflections and Future Plans

Looking back, Thanos wished he had paced his study efforts more evenly instead of cramming. “The exam demands a deep understanding of detailed concepts and their practical applications. Starting earlier and maintaining a steady review schedule would have alleviated some of the stress,” he reflected.

Now that he has passed the PMP exam, Thanos plans to seek employment opportunities in project management and showcase his qualifications as a competent leader capable of handling complex projects. “The PMP certification reinforces my ability to translate abstract ideas into structured tasks and deliverables effectively,” he stated.
