ProDev Holiday Party!

CAS Staff Mentorship Program

Dear Colleagues,

We are excited to announce the Spring 2024 CAS Professional Development Committee Staff Mentorship Program! Applications are open now through Monday, December 18th, 2023. Apply here: https://forms.gle/Ym9HDgwKDxLvk1QBA

In an effort to support the professional and personal growth of our staff, we have designed the mentorship program to foster a developmental relationship in which one staff member with demonstrated expertise in given areas serves as a guide for another staff member looking to develop in those areas. We hope participants will make positive connections among members of the College community and that both the mentee and the mentor learn from each other.

The program will run from January to June 2024, with a minimum ongoing commitment of a one-hour per month meeting (virtually or face-to face) with your mentor or mentee. Mentorship pairings will be based on the results of the application. The Committee will provide monthly conversation guides as starting points for your meetings. Mentorship is not one-size-fits-all and will look different for everyone; we hope mentor/mentee pairings will become thoughtful relationships that reflect the expertise and motivations of both participants.

In addition to the monthly mentor/mentee meetings, participants will attend a virtual orientation and an end-of-year wrap-up; the Committee will also conduct a mid-semester check-in. Participants will receive a budget to reimburse for out-of-pocket coffee expenses.

Professional Development Committee 2023-2024 Kickoff Retreat

On Thursday, August 17th, the 2023-2024 CAS Staff Professional Development Committee gathered at District Hall in Boston’s Seaport neighborhood to prepare for the coming year!  We spent time team building, reflecting on the College’s strategic plan, and planning programs for staff members across the College.

We look forward to continue to bring our ideas to life and connect with our fellow CAS staff in 2023-2024!

Professional/Graduate Programs Panel for Staff: 5/3, 12:30-2:00pm

Dear Arts & Sciences colleagues,

The CAS Professional Development Committee is hosting a panel about professional/graduate programs for staff today, Wednesday May 3rd from 12:30pm to 2:00pm in KCB 106!

This panel will seek to inform CAS staff about various professional/graduate programs across the University.

Majella Dermody, Senior Service Center Manager at BU HR, will provide a brief presentation about the University’s Tuition Remission Benefit (how does it work? What are the tax implications?).

Following the presentation, a panel discussion will begin featuring the following staff members who are/were graduate students:

  2. Kelly Capri, Academic Advisor (Wheelock’s Higher Education Administration program)
  3. Anna Criscitiello, Graduate Services & Program Associate (Wheelock’s Counseling program)

Lunch & Learn, Thurs., 3/30: 150th birthday of the College of Arts & Sciences

In March of 1873, the Boston University trustees took a leap of faith when they voted to establish a College of Liberal Arts (now College of Arts & Sciences).  Later that fall, a modest group of 22 men and women took a historic step in U.S. higher education when they gathered in an old Beacon Hill town house to study a blend of classical and modern subjects.  What they didn’t know then was that, 150 years later, a fledgling college would grow to a community of more than 10,00 undergraduate and graduate students, 900 faculty members, and 300 staff members, with nearly 50 departments and programs, and over 3,000 course offerings.

Upcoming CAS Communications Training - February 7

Dear Colleagues,
 
On Friday, February 7, the CAS Communications office will hold a training for chairs, directors, and/or admins on how to best use their services and those of other BU offices involved in communicating to different populations (students, alumni, the general public). 
  • Date: February 7, 2020 
  • Time: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

In this training, the following BU and CAS offices plan to cover these topics:

  • CAS Communications: CAS brand messaging and templates; how we can help you promote your program, research, faculty, and students; briefly discuss website help and the companion theme 
  • BU Today and The Brink: How to pitch stories to BU Today and what they are looking to write about 
  • BU Media Relations and Social Media: How to utilize BU Media Relations to promote faculty awards, research, and other accomplishments 
  • CAS Office of Student Programs and Leadership: How to promote special academic opportunities or events to students, including opportunities at Open House 
  • Alumni Relations: How to communicate with alumni and get involved in alumni events 
  • Development and Alumni Relations: How to help with alumni fundraising
