Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground (HTC) at BU
Howard Thurman worked to shatter barriers that separate people based on race, culture, religion, ethnicity, gender, and sexual identity. The HTC is a resource to promote to your students as “a place where cultural expression in all of its forms is embraced and encouraged.” HTC is an important resource for all undergraduate affairs administrators to familize themselves with.
The HTC has Student Ambassadors who help run the programs and build community. The HTC hosts discussions and drop-ins, as well as special events. Weekly events include things such as the HTC Coffee and Conversation on Fridays 3-5pm. Be sure to join the HTC mailing list here to receive weekly newsletters and learn about programs and events going on with the HTC.
Diversity-Focused Student Groups & Programming
It is important to make sure that we promote and encourage diversity-focused student groups and programming. Several departments have certain community-focused group to help promote diversity such as STEM-women focused groups, or first-generation support communities, as well as URM communities. Other groups are for the BU community in general as well.
Some examples of these communities are:
- Artemis Project – run by undergraduate women at BU and conducts a summer program to introduce high school girls to the STEM field.
- Mixed Student Union – creates a safe space and builds a community of students who are mixed race or feel disconnected to their culture.
