The opening faculty recital of the 2014 season was stunning, featuring Terry Everson, the trumpet teacher here at BUTI. Also featured were Shiela Kibbe, chair of the collaborative piano department at BU, Becca Zeisler, BU graduate, and Lotte Olsen, a DMA student of Professor Everson.

The audience included students, faculty, and staff who all shared an enthusiastic enjoyment of the program. In addition to his spectacular performances,  Everson’s teaching has received deserved recognition this year as he was nominated for and won BU’s prestigious Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching. An “accidental professor”, Professor Everson never intended to teach, but found great fulfillment teaching nonetheless. His former students have achieved such successes as winning the position of principal trumpet of the St. Louis Symphony, winning esteemed international competitions, gaining professorships at Grand Valley State University in Michigan and Texas Tech University, and various other educational, conducting, and performance engagements. Everson’s teaching focuses on educating the whole musician, as well as the fact that cooperation “is a better life skill than competition”. He works to find opportunities for engaging his students into the professional world, either as participants or as spectators.

A champion of new music, Professor Everson performed the premieres of several works on the program. Contemporary works such as Puck by Michael Djupstrom and Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Harold Shapero displayed Everson’s innate musicality. He consistently seeks out new repertoire for the trumpet, as well as opportunities to perform and share his discoveries with others. As principal trumpet of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and a frequent substitute with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops Orchestra, Everson is a sought-after performer and is equally as popular as an educator. We are fortunate to have such a renowned figure, as well as kind and generous person, here with us at BUTI.
