Textbook: Pre-intermediate MARKET LEADER, 3rd Edition: Cotton, Falvey, Kent, Pearson Publishing (Do Not Buy the workbook) At the bookstore, tell them your course number: E4140 to buy your book.
Other Required Materials:
- Pens and paper
- 3-ring notebook for many handouts that will be needed for tests
- 3X5 index cards for learning vocabulary
Course Overview: The emphasis of this course is on oral and written communication used in business situations. In addition to improving your language skills, course materials will also help you to increase your understanding of global business culture and the cultures of the other students in this class.
Boston University CELOP has identified the following language goals for students at your level:
Reading:
- Understand written texts and other business communications (letters, emails, reports, etc.)
Writing:
- Write a coherent business communication (letter, email, report) of several paragraphs.
- Revise written work based on teacher’s suggestions.
Speaking
- Perform some social and business functions.
- Participate in business discussions with several participants.
Listening
- Understand social conversations.
- Understand business discussions with several participants.
Assessment Criteria:
Students will be assessed on class participation, written work, quizzes, homework, the midterm exam and final exam. If you miss a quiz or an exam, your score will be 0%. If you are absent, you still must do your homework.
Exam/Evaluation Schedule:
The midterm exam will take place week 5 and the final exam will take place week 11 of this semester.
Absence Policy: Don’t miss class!
You are expected to attend all classes. In order to receive a Certificate of Attendance from CELOP, you must attend 85% of your program hours, core & elective combined. There are no excused absences. Religious holidays, illness, business trips, family visits, IBT, college interviews, driver’s license appointments, etc… are all hours missed. Also if you miss more than 20% of all your program class hours, you will automatically be put on probation.
Late Policy: Don’t be late!
You are expected to be on time to class at the beginning of class and after the break. If you arrive late you will be marked late, and 3 times late = 1 hour absent. In addition, if you arrive more than 10 minutes late, you will ALSO be marked absent for the time you miss. If you must be late, please just enter the room quietly and take a seat.
