{"id":65,"date":"2011-09-11T10:25:33","date_gmt":"2011-09-11T14:25:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/wing\/?p=65"},"modified":"2011-09-11T10:25:33","modified_gmt":"2011-09-11T14:25:33","slug":"serious-about-being-green","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/wing\/2011\/09\/11\/serious-about-being-green\/","title":{"rendered":"Serious about being Green"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the &#8220;best papers&#8221; at this year&#8217;s Green Computing Workshop at SIGCOMM was\u00a0<a title=\"Networking in the Long Emergency\" href=\"http:\/\/conferences.sigcomm.org\/sigcomm\/2011\/papers\/greennet\/p37.pdf\">Networking in the Long Emergency<\/a>. \u00a0 This paper is well worth a read, perhaps after you&#8217;ve looked at the striking\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/conferences.sigcomm.org\/sigcomm\/2011\/slides\/gs37.pdf\">slide deck<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The paper is sort of a &#8220;coming of age&#8221; message for green networking: \u00a0whereas most green networking papers have taken the general approach of &#8220;let&#8217;s see what percent of energy consumption we can save&#8221;, this paper starts by looking at <em>why <\/em>energy savings is so important. \u00a0 Once you start from that perspective, research goals become rather different.<\/p>\n<p>One of the valuable parts of the paper is that it explicitly enumerates a large body of principles and example research questions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the &#8220;best papers&#8221; at this year&#8217;s Green Computing Workshop at SIGCOMM was\u00a0Networking in the Long Emergency. \u00a0 This paper is well worth a read, perhaps after you&#8217;ve looked at the striking\u00a0slide deck.
