FOR MONDAY, April 14:

1.  Grammar exam on transition signals and the different sentence types.  This will not be a long exam.  Study both ch. 11 in Grammar Sense 4 (coordinators and conjunctive adverbs, which GR4 calls “transition signals”) and all the papers I gave you.  From ch. 12:  subordinators of concession, contrast,  purpose and reason.   Prepositional phrases (type 4 sentences) that we have worked on:  in spite of,  despite, because of.  Learn the sentence patterns with punctuation. 

2.  Bring both books on Monday.

FOR MONDAY, April 7:  your own sentences with these words as well.

3.  Revise the essays you did last Wednesday according to the corrections needed that I indicated on your papers. 

I will be giving you an exam next week — probably on Friday — on the transition signals, so start reviewing them all and all the sentence types. If you are confused by anything, come prepared with questions, and/or come to my office hours. 

 

For FRIDAY, April 4:

Grammar Sense 4:  pp.212-219.  Prepare the reading “Exam Superstitions” and the questions that follow.  Read through all the grammar notes (we’ve already talked about all this with the exceptions of Showing time / place / purpose.)

Do B2 (pg. 217), B3 & B5 (218-219.) 

 

FOR WEDNESDAY March 26 &FRIDAY March 28 bring both books– ALWAYS bring both books until I tell you otherwise.

1.  Pathways:  Listen to pg. 94 A ; study the words in blue and look them up if necessary. Prepare an answer for B2.  

2. Pg. 95, Do A

 

FOR MONDAY March 24:  Bring BOTH BOOKS!

1.  Study the Pathways transcript I handed out Friday.  I will  give you a dictation.

2.  GS4:  Read and study pp. 197-200.  Come prepared with questions.  Do exercise C2 in the book.

 

For FRIDAY MARCH 21st, please bring both textbooks:  Pathways & Grammar Sense 4.

 Homework for Friday:

1.  GS4:  ch. 11, pp. 195-197:  finish B2 (#s 6-12) in the book; on a separate piece of paper to hand in:  B3 A. #1,2,3:  write out a separate sentence completion for each coordinator, and B.1,2,3,4.  In the book,do B4, Omitting Words after Conjunctions; in the book pg. 197, Think Critically about Meaning and Use matching exercise.

2.  One-page essay:  Answer question 4 (pg. 191) from the reading about conflict resolution.  Vary your vocabulary, using the many words and phrases we found in the reading. Double-space and label as draft #1.

3. Pathways 4:  pg. 85 Using the vocabulary from pg. 84, do exercise A & c, and prepare answers for B, discussion questions.

 

 HOMEWORK for Monday, March 3:

1.  Answer the questions on pp. 45 ex. B and 47 Critical Thinking.  in writing to be handed in.  Use words and word forms from the new vocabulary as much as possible.

HOMEWORK for FRIDAY, February 21:

1. In Pathways, pg. 25 Exercise B, fill in the appropriate vocabulary word and its correct form in the exercise about mangrove forests.

2. pg. 27: Listen again to “A Guided Tour”, and complete the  Note-taking exercise at the top and the questions in A, After Listening.

3.  Continue working on your autobiography:  it is due on Monday.

HOMEWORK given Friday, February 14th:

1.  From the reading Winning and Losing, write sentences using the vocabulary in C, page 94.  These should be your own original sentences, not something from a dictionary or book.  Also, use the phrases “to keep a high profile” and “to keep a low profile.

2.  Answer the questions using this vocabulary in Ex. B on page 100.  Send your answers in an email to me:  cflamm@bu.edu.

3.  Revise your essays. Draft #2 is due on Wednesday, February 19th.

4.  Read the handout, “From paragraph to essay” and answer the questions. Jen will give you a missing page (12) on Tuesday.

5.  Learn from your mistakes:  study the parts of speech material and internalize the rules.  Knowing the rules will make your life easier in so many ways. They are tools that will help you read faster, write and speak and understand what you hear more accurately.

 

 

For Monday, February 10th:

1.  Write an essay about the following topic:

 What is a problem that your city  [or a city you know well] is facing??  How is the city dealing with it or how can the city deal with it?  Explain the problem, giving detailed background information.  Explain the solution or solutions.  Evaluate the solution(s).  Do you think it is (they are) good, bad, or mixed?  Explain why you think so.

Try to use vocabulary from the chapter, especially words or word forms that are new to you.

Follow the Conventions for Written Work:  word process your essay and double-space it!  (No handwritten essays.)

2.  Watch at least some of the Olympics.  The Opening Ceremony starts at 7:30 Friday evening on NBC (channel 7 in Boston.)

Parts of Speech Quiz!  Be sure that you learn the information sheet on Parts of Speech by heart.

Write an original sentence for each of the ten vocabulary words.
