Monday, December 6 — E V A L U A T I V E ACTIVITIES — DO NOT BE LATE OR ABSENT!!
1. Vocabulary: finish chapter 15, the cross-word puzzle, AND Unit tests 1,2 & 3. [The Post-test will be on WEDNESDAY.]
2. Complete the Appositives handout 10-3 about reducing sentences and moving the appositive around the sentence. [There will be a grammar exam on Wednesday and this will be on it. It will also be on the CELOP TOEFL exam.]
3. AC4: Exercises and reading pp. 124-128.
4. Do the TOEFL Reading section (55 minutes) and the TOEFL structure section (25 minutes) in preparation for the TOEFL on Tuesday afternoon. We will go over the structure section and I will give you the answers for the reading section.
5. There will be a READING EXAM.

On WEDNESDAY we will have the vocabulary unit post-test, a listening test and a grammar test. The grammar test will include adjective clauses, reduced adjective clauses, the transition signals and all 4 sentence types. More info to follow, but be sure that you know this material and can produce sentences.
For FRIDAY, December 3–
1. AC4: pp. 122-123–Chapter 6 Listening exercise. Listen as many times as necessary to “develop as inclusive a list as possible” for Question 2. Also, study the statements on page 123 and the degree of certainly/uncertainty that each expresses. Note that there are alternate expressions to say the same thing.
2. Vocabulary: Prepare for quiz on chapter 13; complete chapter 14 exercises.
3. APPOSITIVES; complete handout.

For MONDAY, November 29 – bring all books, please
1. Grammar: pp. 181-182, “examining meaning and use” of adjective phrases

1. Bring in an article you have found (in a newspaper or magazine) on some kind of innovation and prepare a short presentation about it and why you thought it was interesting to share the content with the group. You may need to teach some vocabulary words from it, so look up the definitions in English.

Friday, Nov. 12
1. Vocab: write a story with words from chapter 9, quiz for chapter 9; finish exercises for chapter 10
2. complete the combinations for TIME sentence combining sheet (handout). Don’t worry too much about sentence type 4 because of the need to make transformations/rewrite the clauses into noun phrases, but do give it some thought.
3. We will start with AC4 tomorrow.
Thursday, Nov. 11 (second half) — Bring all the books
1. Grammar Sense 4: pp. 177-178 Do (on paper to hand in) B5 , B6–A & B and (in the book) B7
2. Vocabulary: write a story using the vocabulary from chapter 8; quiz tomorrow. Do Chapter 9 exercises.
WEDNESDAY, Nov. 10
1. AC4: pp. 94-95– prepare questions 1, 2 (innovation over the centuries chart), and 3.
2. Grammar Sense 4: exercises B1 through B4-A. (pp. 175-177). Note that exercises B1 and B2 are listening exercises, and you can gain access to them through the MLL website (see instructions on wiki front page.)
MONDAY, November 8:
1. Vocabulary book: do chapter 8. Also, review the ‘extreme word’ from AC4 pp. 58-59.
2. AC4: Answer the questions on page 63 for your section: Student A = Thomas, Nuddhawutte, Ken, Abdulaziz, Bandar; Student B= MJ, Gulzhan, Yuri, Sophie, Erin; Student C=Maram, Koo, Symbat, Valikhan, Eva
3. Grammar Sense 4: Examining Meaning and Use exercise top of page 172

FRIDAY, November 5:
1. Grammar Sense 4: Chapter 10, pp. 170-171. Read the passage “All About Einstein” and write the answers to A3 questions. Also answer A4 questions.
2. AC4: pg. 58 –finish ‘extreme word or expression’ exercise.
3. Vocabulary: review words for chapter 7 quiz. Write a paragraph (a real or imagined story or description) using all these words.
4. Bring Monochronic/polychronic time test. Be prepared to discuss answers/ask questions.
WEDNESDAY, November 3:
1. Vocabulary book: review chapter 6 words (quiz) and finish chapter 7.
2. AC4:Review the chart about famous conflagrations (now there’s a new word for you!) on page 53. Answer questions at the top of 54 — we’ll go over in class.


Monday, November 1:
1. AC4: Follow up to pp. 48 and 49 (which we did in class): Do the reading “The Beneficial Effects of Forest Fires” and answer all the questions on pp. 50-top of 53.
2. Complete chapter 6 in the vocabulary book.

Wednesday, October 27: Reading exams from units 1 & 2 of AC4. (You should review both units.) Also, Advancing Vocabulary Skills Unit 1 Posttest.
Thursday, October 28 (second half of class): Reading exam on a topic you have not read about.
Friday, October 29: Grammar/writing: Revisiting Parts of Speech and Transition Signals/Sentence Types (see my handouts.)
*******There will be a short quiz about sentence types and transition signals. You will definitely be quizzed on: hence, thus, however, since, as, whereas & while (contrast), for, consequently.

For Monday, October 25:
1. Review Academic Connections 4 for vocabulary and content. Be especially familiar with unit 2. You will be taking a reading midterm on a reading that you have not seen before but it will be on a familiar topic.
2. Advancing Vocabulary Skills: We will finish going over the Unit Tests on Monday. Do Unit Test 4 (pp. 35-36).
3. AC4: After you have registered your access code for the book, do the onlinereading material to check your progress.
4. Finish the TOEFL handout grammar exercises S41, S42, S43.

1. Academic Connections 4: Follow the instructions on the front page of the wiki to access the audio: this is the first book in the list. Click on it. Then choose: “03 Unit 2 Global Listening Exercise 2” to check the order of information presented in the lecture outline. See how well you were able to correctly predict that order.
2. Vocab: Do crossword puzzle and Tests 1, 2 & 3.
3. Handout: TOEFL “Practice with Word Forms”. Read the information on pp. 169-171. Do Ex. S38, 39 & 40.

For Wednesday, October 20
1. Academic Connections 4: pp. 30 – 33 Global Reading–Recognizing Multiple Organizational Patterns. Please read the article, “The Search for Leadership Traits”, and answer the questions about each section, fill in the information in the graphic organizers following the reading.
2. Advancing Vocabulary Skills: Do chapter 5, and review for chapter 4 quiz.

For Tuesday, October 19 (second half of class)
1. Advancing Vocabulary Skills: Finish all exercises in chapter 4.
2. Advancing Vocabulary Skills: Study for chapter 3 quiz.
3. Academic Connections 4: Page 29-30 –We will finish discussing questions 1&2 about Boss A and Boss B tomorrow. (Be prepared to participate.) On page 30, read the vocabulary terms and meanings and fill in column 3 (Link to Your Own Experience).

1. Be prepared to talk briefly about a well-known leader in your country (could be any kind of leader — business, political, whatever.) Do people see this person as effective or ineffective? Why?

2. Watch these videos about gated communities (access control solution in the essay on page 16.) What are the advantages and disadvantages of these communities?

3. Jane Jacobs had very different ideas about urban design than those who came after her. She addressed fear of crime by mixing different areas of the city with different uses and different people, whereas others advocated equipment and measures that deflect and isolate criminals. Write a one-page, double-spaced essay comparing these competing ideas. Which do you agree with more and why? Which do you disagree with and why?

For Monday, October 4:

1. Academic Connections 4: pp. 15-16. Read the essay on page 16 and answer the questions on page 15 (1&2) and the top of page 17 (Question 1) about it.
2. Transition signals of Concession and Contrast: identify the sentence patterns of each example.
3. Advancing Vocabulary Skills — immerse yourself in the methodology and reasoning behind it for the vocabulary book. Read and answer all the questions in the introduction (pp. 1-6.)

For Friday, October 1:
1. Read, study and learn all the information on my Parts of Speech explanation sheet. This will ALL be on the test next week.
2. Appendix 1: Supplementary Grammar Units, Basic Grammar Terminology: Read, study and do the exercises to hand in. Do them right on the handout; it’s not necessary to do them on a separate sheet.

For Thursday, September 30:
1. Listen again to Academic Connections 4 [02 Unit 1 Global Listening Ex. 2] and take notes if you need more practice. (Instructions for accessing the textbook audio materials are on the first page of this wiki.)
2. Bring the Parts of Speech exercise; we will go over it tomorrow.
