For THURSDAY, JULY 5:
1. New Directions: Phrasal verb exercise, pg. 146
2. Thyra Johnston obituary: use 3 different colors to analyze it for adjective clauses, appositives, and noun clauses. Summarize the main idea. Come to class with questions about the content.
3. Vocabulary: finish up chapters 12 and 13.
4. Be sure to bring your Advanced Listening Comprehension.
As they say, “It ain’t over till it’s over.” Looking forward to our last class together tomorrow. We will have one more exam — for which you cannot study, so just come and enjoy a very interesting reading.
Be prepared for exams all this week: reading, listening/notetaking, vocabulary, grammar.
HOMEWORK FOR TUESDAY, JULY 3rd:
1. Prepare for vocabulary quiz, chapter 11.
2. New Directions: Chapter 3, read core reading 1: “Computers and the Pursuit of Happiness” and “an Opposing View”. Prepare the sections “Main Idea’ and ‘Reflecting on Content”.
******This is very sophisticated in language and style. You should also find it controversial. Paqy attention to the author’s tone and to vocabulary. Be prepared for a quiz based on the reading at the beginning of class. It will be on the author’s viewpoint, not on yours, so be clear about what the author states in the first essay.

1. Read through the APA paper with a highlighter in hand. Highlight all the references to research, authors of research, and the verbs used to introduce research information.
2. VOCABULARY: Do the cross-word puzzle and unit tests that follow chapter 10. Use this review to learn the words that you haven’t learned yet. We will have some kind of competition with these words.
3. NEW DIRECTIONS: Reflecting on Content, A Writer’s Technique: write out summarizing and paraphrasing Be prepared to discuss it all.
