2019 Weekend 1 Race Recap: The Philly Phyler in Philadelphia, PA.

This past weekend BU Cycling sent quite a few riders down to Philadelphia, PA for the first weekend of ECCC racing. We racked up quite a few omnium points as a result of everyone’s hard efforts.

The weekend started off with the Men’s C TTT, where Anthony and Haiyun came in at a solid 5th place for 14 points. The Women’s D TTT followed, with a 1st place finish by Sara and Isabella for 27 points. The Men’s A TTT squad, David, Yumeto, and Arun, suffered mechanicals but collected 68 points along the way.

The circuit race course was initially thought to have been modified as a result of heavy rains on Friday, however all was cleared up and the Schuykill Scramble proceeded on the quintessential pothole-ridden Philly roads. The Men’s C field started first, with Yumeto coming in 5th. The Women’s D field saw Isabella contest a bunch sprint for 4th place finish. The Men’s Open 3/4  race followed, alumni Ryan Singh (now of ButcherBox Cycling) and Yumeto raced, with Ryan setting all-time power records discovering his talent as an all-rounder and Yumeto pulling out after 2 laps up the road. Last but not least, David raced the Men’s A field which saw a four-man breakaway go five minutes up the road and never return, nevertheless he scored valuable omnium points towards our omnium standings.

All day Sunday, BU riders raced the Temple Campus Criterium. Our first points of the day came from a delayed Men’s C race as Yumeto came in a close 2nd place with the help of Arun and Anthony. In the Women’s D race, Sara made the breakaway, coming in 4th after a well-fought final lap. In the same race, Isabella contested the 2nd prime as well, both ladies getting us even more points towards our omnium ambitions. The Men’s A race saw a break lap the field, and a chase group occupying the rest of the podium. David took 3rd in the bunch sprint, garnering the largest amount of omnium points by a BU rider at this weekend.

The squad will next heading to Bard College next week for the ECCC Teambuilder Group Ride. The following week, they’ll be competing at Ninigret, and then back to the usual ECCC schedule afterwards. As of today, we are 6th in the omnium, and will be looking to improve our placings in the coming weeks.
