BU Travels to Naval Academy

On Saturday, November 11, the Boston University Squash Team Team traveled to Annapolis Maryland to compete at the United States Naval Academy at the annual Veteran’s Weekend Round Robin.

The women began the weekend with a 5-4 victory against Johns Hopkins University. Number four seed Jackie Loring won the deciding match for the team, refusing to let up in a grueling 5 game competition (12-10, 7-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-3) against her opponent. In the afternoon the women competed against Haverford College and Georgetown Universityrespectively. Both schools provided a tough challenge for the women who ultimately lost both matches (9-0). However, the team never faltered in their spirit or sportsmanship and look forward to the possibility of taking on both teams again at Nationals.

The men saw an equally challenging weekend as they competed against four teams: Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Haverford, and Navy. The men found success against both John’s Hopkins and Georgetown, winning both matches with unwavering determination and confidence on the court. Haverford went on to claim a 8-1 victory over our team, but number two seed Marwan A. Sallam played an excellent match with his opponent David Chase. The match went to five games (9-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8) the last of which determined Sallam’s win. The men succumbed to a loss against Navy (9-0), but were still able to keep their competitive edge throughout the entirety of every game.

Our team would like to extend another huge thank you to the United States Naval Academy for hosting us last weekend, as well as a thank you to those who came to support our team at the matches. This weekend, Saturday, November 18, the men and women will travel to Amherst College to compete.

Travis Roy Foundation 5k, 10/30/2016

On Sunday, October 30th, the Squash team had the pleasure of volunteering at the Travis Roy Foundation 5k in Newton, MA. Laura Ferreira-Cesar ('18) has been an active volunteer in this organization since her freshman year at Boston University. Travis has many connections to our team having attended Tabor Academy, the alma matter of both Laura and Captain Joel Lavoie and is a Boston University Terrier. His foundation is "dedicated to enhancing the life of individuals with spinal cord injuries and their families by providing adaptive equipment and to finding a cure through increased funding of research, resulting in self-reliance and the ability to be as independent as possible."

During the 5k, the team participated in helping in the kids race, where several of our players ran along the kids, handed out water, tracking times, registering runners and placed around the corse to direct runners. All participants were extremely spirited dressed in their halloween entire. The team had a great time volunteering and meeting Travis, whose story has truly inspired each of us. The team enjoyed being a part of such a great cause and hope to work with this foundation in the future!

Community Service: Challah for Hunger

The BU Squash Team was very excited to find such an engaging community service opportunity. Challah for Hunger, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to promoting hunger relief and encouraging awareness across America for the purpose of Jewish mitzvahs, was such a great experience for everyone on the team. Each team member was able to create their own challahs. The team even purchased some once they were baked! We thank Challah for Hunger for hosting us.
