JOB DESCRIPTION:
Electricity Analyst (full or part-time project)
The Vote Solar Initiative is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing solar energy into the mainstream through state, local and federal advocacy. We are in search of a top-notch researcher to provide data-driven materials to advance our mission.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Broadly speaking, Vote Solar seeks a candidate to collate research, conduct original analyses and generate reports to support our key campaigns. Sample projects include:
• Collect analyses on solar and conventional power cost information from government agencies, investment banks, research institutions, and other credible sources. Display results in clear, simple metrics and graphics.
• Collect public data on the cost of solar, other renewable, and conventional generation from actual contracts, dig into and analyze utility filings for cost recovery, parse SEC filings from public companies. Display results in clear, simple metrics and graphics.
• Conduct investigations into (and prepare presentations of) the specific areas in the value chain where reductions in costs are possible, and how they may be achieved. Display results in clear, simple metrics and graphics.
• Prepare reports on the potential rate impact of new & proposed solar programs in target states.
• Prepare reports on the job and economic development impact of new & proposed solar programs in target states using NREL’s Jobs and Economic Development Impact (JEDI) tool.
• Conduct analyses of the correspondence of solar generation to demand in specific areas. Display results in clear, simple metrics and graphics.
• Assess estimated cost of participation in community solar projects in target states.
• Quantify transmission and distribution benefits of solar power from grid tied systems. Analyze associated costs/benefits of net metering those systems.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants should have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, knowledge of the field, and three years of relevant work experience on energy issues.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Strong quantitative, analytical, and research skills; proficiency with analytic software; ability to write well for scientific and general audiences; familiarity with electricity and solar power markets necessary; familiarity with economics and public policy helpful; moderate graphic or design skills helpful but not critical.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Detailed understanding of solar technologies, performance characteristics and market structures; electric industry operations, regulations, and legal framework; and electricity modeling techniques. Knowledge of energy-related environmental issues strongly preferred.
COMMITMENT/ LOCATION
20-40 hours a week, 3-6 months (dependent on funds raised) San Francisco preferred.
