Experiencing the arts in a business context provides a unique vehicle that can be utilized to develop whole brain thinking-especially emotional intelligence in corporations which when synthesized can create authenticity in product development and branding, vibrant internal communication styles creating stronger bonds and better teams, a delivery vehicle for embedding key messaging as well as offering an opportunity to set the mind on fire with fresh perspectives and ideas– all essential and underutilized skills for 21st Century growth that once developed, can significantly impact the bottom line.

Certainly many mid 20th century theater artists found their way into Madison Avenue. (I know many theatre alum from the 60s who made real success for themselves in that arena.) As the notion of communciation has expanded beyond advertising and public relations and ‘messaging’ has filtered every component of our lives, it is no surprise that the artist finds a welcome home in the mansion of global corporations. Artists need to be aware of their power to contribute to the corporate culture. They also need to be aware that the art can serve the corporation or can be a tool that is critical of it. Ultimately, the artist needs to know who he/she is and/or wants to be. Our role as their educators is to be able to help them see the possibilities, without judgement, but with clear understanding of the ramifications of those choices.
