Excellence (from meeting notes)

Excellence. Artistic excellence and excellence in the discipline. Balance/tension between excellence and broader “liberal arts” focus. Balance between professional/disciplinary focus (training, accomplishment, recognition) and other educational goals for students. Connection to whole artists/whole student theme (below). Excellence for the University—a need for literacy in the arts across BU (sciences, social sciences, and then the arts. “Universe” in university.)

I’ve been having this conversation around round tables a lot, and what I always realize, too late, and before I can figure out how to articulate it, is that we, artists and arts administrators, struggle w/ defining artistic excellence around the work….. or maybe I speak only for those conversations having to do w/ theatre. I think it goes back to Dynamic Innovation (carving out our core values and boldly speaking to aesthetics as well)
