FInding myself a bit displeased with Rocco’s ‘too many theaters’ concoction. And the follow-up “look how I got people talking” moment of self congratulation…also a tad unsettling.
An agenda emerges for all advocates emerging?
1. creating a path to new philanthropy for a generation of earners not used to the process?
2. creating an understanding of the real meaning of Board leadership and artistic nurturing?
3. how do we really feel about congressional intimidation of the arts via the smithsonian fiasco – Any NEA statement on that?
4. proposed draconian cuts by the House majority in the meager subsidies that exist in the current NEA budget?
5. any reaction to Mr. L.’s notion that the quantity of arts users isn’t going to rise, so we need to diminish the number of providers? Really? So much for NEA mandates of advocating for the increased role of the arts in American society. JFK rolls over in his grave.
6. From our BU perch – might we engage in this conversation?

Now we find that the president’s budget cuts the NEA at the same rate or worse than the two republican proposals. So, the NEA has to find folk supporting the current meagre funding levels that match the highest level of resources from years ago. (inflation NOT included.) Already, the right has moved its position to now proposing even deeper cuts and in one case, total defunding of the agency.
