Identity of CFA. Defining the identity of CFA and the Schools as a clear, firm, aspiration for CFA, not just limited to circumstance and current position (CFA is as it is today). Relationship between how we define the identity of CFA and the mission of CFA. Identity as an expression of shared values:
- Fundamental belief in a rigorous education; with real depth in the discipline.
- Appreciation of the fundamentals of each art form—a classical way of learning.
- Classical perspective but also an appreciation that the Academy can be new, can be about inventing and reinventing.

If we define our character by our actions – what might we do together to express our values? Maybe a brainstorm would produce some interesting ideas? I was thinking about the windows on the front of CFA – wondering how much impact the posters have on ticket sales….also what we might do in them when we aren’t advertising an exhibit, production, concert. Might the schools gather to celebrate individual artists or artistic collaboratives that matter or reflect a virtue that we value as a school? Might we use the windows in different ways or have alternative possibilities for their utilization when we are ‘between’ posters? Simple idea….but perhaps we could have some fun thinking about how thought becomes action in an almost playful manner. And in doing some of that find that our actions actually do a great deal to define us.

My feeling is we have to go way beyond posters, which nobody really looks at outside our building. What else could we do with the windows when posters aren’t in them? Could we make them light up? Could we enlarge them so they took up much more space and there were 3, for 3 schools and we could have them electronically showing what goes on? Could you film a rehearsal and simultaneously it would be projected onto that screen outside the building so folks walking by could see it? Could we light up the building at night? Could we make the place look like a creative place?
We can do all these things, I think.

Just saw this quote:
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes u come alive and go do it. B/c what the world needs=people who have come alive.” H Thurman

I really like the idea of projecting video images of rehearsals, creating of new works, talking about the work…. maybe in the lobby as well. Whenever I’m here on the weekends I enjoy seeing the tiny little musicians (especially the little bass players and the moms with the mini-vans toting around the giant instruments…. they should be given mommy awards…) I digress… sorry. But what a recruiting, when the kids are sitting, playing w/ their little nintendos while waiting for their rehearsals and lessons, kids, and by default their parents, will park themselves in front of anything that looks like a screen…. how exciting if our students were in dialogue with them. Even asking them questions, and then responding to them, by name, the following week. Similarly, cool things, like stage combat….fencing… I should think exciting on video, outside or inside the building.
