Draft 2 of Field Notes

Captions: In this field notes, I use the manager’s answer to develop my own analysis. According to her information, I relate other sources to Ethiopian culture and analyze the business and environment of an Ethiopian restaurant. This notes can show my effort to construct analysis for my paper.

1.

Facts: People in the restaurant are from different countries and are mostly American. The interesting fact is in this Ethiopian restaurant, there is no Ethiopian customer.

Draft: I felt very curious and confused about this fact. Generally, I can see a lot of Chinese people in Chinese restaurants and a lot of Korean people in Korean restaurants, etc.

Analysis and ideas: The manager then answered my question. Ethiopian people mostly eat at home and they merely dine out. However, they still order take-out. According to the manager, there are many take-out ordered during that day. I then think about the business of restaurant in Ethiopian. If Ethiopian people seldom eat out, there would be few restaurants in Ethiopian or the restaurants generally only offer take-out.

2.

Facts: According to the manager, most people said the food there is very delicious. During my second visiting which is a Saturday night, there were many groups of people in the restaurant and the first floor was almost full (there is a basement in the restaurant but it is a bar so people usually have dinner on the first floor).

Draft: Though Ethiopian culture is not a main culture in the world and Ethiopia is a small country without big power, Ethiopian food is still welcome in America among American people.

Analysis and ideas: As a Chinese, I feel the Ethiopian food is very different but meanwhile similar to Chinese food. The dish in the restaurant is usually some bread and some different types of meat. People usually use bread to wrap the meat and eat with their hands. This way of presenting and eating food is very different from Chinese way of presenting and eating food, but the taste of the meat is somewhat similar to the taste of some kinds of Chinese meat.

3.

Facts: The environment plays an important role in the restaurant. According to the manager, Valentine’s day is the busiest day during one year. Customers said they really like the environment and atmosphere of the restaurant.

Draft: I also like the setting of the restaurant. It is a little bit dark in the restaurant and it is very quiet though there are many people. That might be the reason that couples like eating at there. Usually Chinese restaurant is noisy and full of people. I personally prefer a quiet eating environment.

Analysis and ideas: The environment is considered an important element of a restaurant recently. A good and comfortable environment of a restaurant could be more attractive to customers.
