This is the screenshot practice of the film “Eat Drink Man Woman”. Analyzing particular scene and conversation between characters is a great process for me to know how this story develops. For example, the scene that the street is crowded with people and vehicles shows us a fast-changing city-Taipei. The director-Ang Lee uses this scene to tell us this film is not all about food and love but also about city and culture. Watching films carefully and analyzing details carefully really helps me to better understand what the film maker wants to express. And I also learn that if we have to write a paper about a particular film in the future, we can firstly take the screenshot practice then we will have a better perspective.
Love is the center view of he movie. Most audiences pay attention to the love between Mr.Chu and JinRong or the love between the first daughter and Coach. Nobody cares about the relationship between Mr.Chu and his dead wife. Although they get together not purely because they love each other but because some traditional things, his dead wife is significant to him. This kind of love is deep but lack of romance.
This image shows us the background. It’s Taipei, the place of developing the whole story. This story is not only about family, culture and sex but also about a city-Taipei.
We see that Mr.Chu is a professional chief who is necessary to the restaurant. Although he looks tender and cares for his family, he is strong and successful when he works.
This scene is a talk between JinRong and Jiazhen Zhu. They both have to take care of their parents. I think the difference is that JinRong’s mother is annoying while Mr.Chu is independent. But the most interesting thing is that they both do something which doesn’t match their identity: JinRong falls in love with Mr.Chu and is pregnant; Jiazhen Zhu falls in love with Coach and leaves home suddenly.
The second daughter wanted to be independent early but finally accompanies with her father. The oldest daughter used to take the responsibility of whole family but when she falls in love with a guy, she suddenly leaves home and starts her own life at the end of the story.
At the end of the film, Mr. Chu gets her taste back. I think it’s a kind of representation: it’s time for Mr.Chu to think for himself and start a new life.
