Urban Waters/Mystic River Co-op Position

The Co-op position will provide technical, engineering/scientific and administrative support to scientists, engineers, and technical staff involved with implementing and administering agency environmental protection programs in the Surface Water Branch. The Branch is responsible for watershed, nonpoint source, stormwater, urban waters as well as ocean and coastal programs. Duties may include the following:

· Support and assist with activities relating to the Mystic River Watershed Initiative including the following: drafting regional email updates, maintaining Mystic River website, preparing for and attending conference calls and steering committee meetings, taking meeting notes and tracking follow-up items, assisting with initiative logistics, replying to inquires via email and in writing, consolidating and analyzing monitoring data, developing GIS maps, and working on projects for the initiative.

· Serve as technical resource to the Mystic River Watershed Initiative Science Committee as needed.

· Convene a meeting of interested deans or department heads from area colleges and universities to discuss areas for collaboration in support of EPA’s Mystic River Watershed Initiative. [See website at http://www.epa.gov/region01/mysticriver/index.html.]

· Compile and analyze data to support various low impact development techniques and how they can be applied widely in urban environments.

· Coordinate and complete tasks and projects in support of the Region’s Urban Waters Initiative.

· Assist with planning and execution of public outreach events (e.g., beach, Bold survey vessel, no discharge events, etc.). This includes working directly with Region 1 Office of Public Affairs and Office of Ecosystem Protection to plan events in several states.

· Work with beach coordinator to assist with statistical analysis of 2009 regional beach data to identify relationships between dry and wet weather exceedances, bacteria exceedances and no discharge zones, and other significant analyses.

· Participate in and coordinate municipal beach meetings with regional priority communities to further the region’s efforts to minimize beach closures. Assist with the development and implementation of beach action plans for these communities.

Interested candidates must be enrolled in a masters or PhD program in the Boston area at least half time in environmental science, biology, environmental engineering, or related scientific field. This position requires some travel in the Boston area and throughout New England.
