GIS Mapping Internship – Earthwatch Institute

Position details

Earthwatch is looking for one intern to support the Field Management, Research, and Communications departments with developing the mapping capabilities of the organisation. Duties may include:

· Developing an in-depth understanding of project locations and research activities undertaken in each location

· Working interdepartmentally to collate all the current GPS data

· Ensuring data accuracy and completeness

· Using ArcGIS and Google Earth:

o Create continental, country, regional and local scale maps

o Political, topographic and road maps of project areas

o Create additional layers to represent features critical to EW business (incident response locations, research sites, land use, habitat, species and community distributions)

o Map must be compatible with several platforms including the web

· Assisting with other departmental support tasks on an as needed basis

The ideal candidate would have the following skills:

· Experience working with ArcGIS software and its applications

· Prior experience of Google Earth – including the creation of layers and KML/Z files

· Knowledge of HTML and web based content management systems (preferred, not required)

As the largest nonprofit organization supporting “citizen science,” in its 40year history, Earthwatch has sponsored over 1350 field research projects in at least 55 countries across the globe. Earthwatch expeditions and field research centres link volunteers with international scientists working within four Research Areas: Climate Change, Oceans, Ecosystem Services, and Cultural Heritage. Since 1971, Earthwatchsponsored research projects have contributed more than 10 million hours of field research time.

Interns will benefit from the collaborative, interdisciplinary approach of this international team. Interns are composed of undergraduate students, graduate students, and mid-career professionals, from a wide range of academic and experiential backgrounds. We encourage use of the internship for academic credit, thesis, or practicum work towards degree or certificate programs.
