Synapse Energy Economics is a research and consulting firm specializing in energy, economic, and environmental topics, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The firm has a professional staff of 25, most with advanced degrees. Synapse specializes in analysis of economic and environmental policies that lead to sustainable, efficient, and equitable energy use. Synapse advises a wide variety of clients, including:

  • State agencies, legislative bodies, public service commissions, energy offices and offices of consumer advocate.
  • Federal agencies (e.g., Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Justice).
  • Environmental organizations at the local, regional, and national levels.

Job Description:

Synapse is seeking an analyst with experience and interest in energy efficiency. The firm provides analyses pertaining to many types of energy efficiency, including efficiency research and development; efficiency standards and building codes; ratepayer-funded efficiency programs; and energy efficiency as a central component in utility integrated resource planning. We assess all aspects of energy efficiency program design and implementation, including efficiency technology assessment; program design, program budgeting; cost-benefit analyses; avoided cost analyses; and a variety of relevant regulatory policies such as program cost recovery, utility performance incentives, and revenue decoupling.

The efficiency specialist would be expected to have some experience on energy efficiency issues, and a strong interest in developing additional expertise in these areas. The specialist would be expected to assist with top-to-bottom review of ratepayer-funded efficiency programs; advocacy and development of regulatory policies to support energy efficiency activities; and assessment of the role of efficiency in addressing climate change. The work would involve quantitative, technical and economic analysis, as well as qualitative assessment of regulatory and public policies. Depending upon experience and availability, the analyst might also work on other Synapse projects that are not related to energy efficiency.

This individual will be expected to be involved at every level of a project; from the review of case documents, to analytical design and implementation; to the writing of reports and testimony. Other responsibilities may include project management, communications with clients, and presentations at meetings and conferences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and at least three years of experience in energy, environmental, or economic field.
  • Electric, gas or energy industry experience or interest. A regulatory background would be a strong advantage.
  • An advanced level of technical skills, the ability to work fluently with spreadsheets, and the ability to review energy efficiency model inputs and outputs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Commitment to the public interest and to the principles of sustainability.
