Synapse Energy Economics is a research and consulting firm specializing in energy, economic, and environmental topics, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The firm has a professional staff of 25, most with advanced degrees. Synapse specializes in analysis of economic and environmental policies that lead to sustainable, efficient, and equitable energy use. Synapse advises a wide variety of clients, including:

  • State agencies, legislative bodies, public service commissions, energy offices and offices of consumer advocate.
  • Federal agencies (e.g., Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Justice).
  • Environmental organizations at the local, regional, and national levels.

Job Description:
Synapse is seeking an analyst with experience and interest in wholesale electricity markets. The firm works for a variety of clients on issues related to the design and operation of wholesale energy, capacity, and ancillary services markets. Our work is generally focused on ensuring successful operation of markets in a way that results in lowest costs to consumers while meeting regulatory and public policy objectives. We frequently focus on opportunities to promote alternative electricity resources, such as demand response, energy efficiency, distributed generation, renewable generators, and non-transmission alternatives in general. We are very actively involved in the New England wholesale electricity markets, and we are also involved in the PJM, New York, MISO, and California markets. We frequently participate in dockets before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).The specialist would be expected to have some experience working on electricity markets, and a strong interest in developing additional expertise in that area. The specialist would be expected to assist with all aspects of Synapse projects covering wholesale electric markets, including attending relevant regional meetings, especially ISO-NE meetings; reviewing proposals from stakeholders; reviewing FERC orders and materials; negotiating positions with other stakeholders; and generally supporting Synapse work in these areas. The work would involve quantitative, technical, and economic analysis, as well as qualitative assessment of regulatory and public policies. Depending upon experience and availability, the analyst might also work on other Synapse projects that are not related to wholesale electricity markets.

This individual will be expected to be involved at every level of a project, including the review of case documents, analytical design and implementation, and the writing of memos and reports. Other responsibilities will include project management, communications with clients, and presentations at meetings and conferences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and at least three years of experience in energy, environmental, or economic field.
  • Electric, gas, or energy industry experience or interest. A regulatory background would be a strong advantage.
  • An advanced level of technical skills, and the ability to work fluently with spreadsheets.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Commitment to the public interest and to the principles of sustainability.
