Synapse Energy Economics is a research and consulting firm specializing in energy, economic, and environmental topics, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The firm has a professional staff of 25, most with advanced degrees. Synapse specializes in analysis of economic and environmental policies that lead to sustainable, efficient, and equitable energy use. Synapse advises a wide variety of clients, including:

  • State agencies, legislative bodies, public service commissions, and offices of consumer advocate.
  • Federal agencies (e.g., Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Justice).
  • Environmental organizations at the local, regional, and national levels.

Job Description:
Synapse is seeking a modeling specialist to design and implement complex analytical projects in the electric energy and environmental fields using both proprietary software packages and in-house analytical tools. The firm is often required to calibrate, run, and modify industry-standard economic models for the purposes to evaluating long-term energy plans, or to evaluate environmental and economic impacts of policy/regulatory initiatives.The modeling specialist would be expected to have or develop an expertise in these models, and to develop analytical tools to post-process modeling results and industry data in-house. This individual will be expected to be involved at every level of a case, from the review of case documents to analytical design and implementation, to the writing of reports and testimony. Other responsibilities may include project management, communication with clients, and presentations at meetings and conferences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and 2+ years of experience, or PhD in energy, environmental, or economic field
  • Electric or energy industry experience or interest; regulatory background would be a strong plus
  • Programming or scripting experience (Matlab, C, Visual Basic, Access, other); an advanced level of spreadsheet fluency is also required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences
  • Commitment to the public interest and to the principles of sustainability
