Teaching

In line with the Jean Monnet Chair requirements, between September 2015 and August 2018, I will be devoting no less than 90 hours of classroom instruction to EU-Law related matters, while also continuing to teach US Contracts Law in the fall semesters (with only brief references to the Draft Common European Sales Law).

My teaching plans are as follows:

II. International Trade Regulation: The Transatlantic Partnership in the Global Economy (39 hours each spring semester)

  • Multilateral vs. Regional Integration: GATT Article XXIV and the Role of the EEC in a Multilateral System
  • Most Favored Nation: The Spanish Roasted Coffee Dispute

  • Europe and International Relations (IR 250/PO 342) (Course provides an overview of the challenges and problems of west European cooperation and integration since 1945 with focus on fundamental events, data, and political systems of European unification) – Unit on the Legal Aspects of the Unification Process
  • Social Europe: Identity, Citizenship, and the Welfare State (IR 551/PO 536) (Course presents the past, present, and future of “social Europe” with focus on impact of European economic and political integration on national identities, cultures, politics, and citizenship; EU policies affecting these social constructions; and changes over time in the welfare state. – Unit on Soft v. Hard Law in the EU Legal Architecture
  • European Integration (IR 550/PO 535) (Course assesses the meaning of “European Union” in its domestic, foreign policy and economic dimensions. To understand the opportunities and limits of cooperation and conflict, relevant areas of European Community policy are discussed from a functionalist and realist perspective.) – Unit on Preliminary References to the Court of Justice of the EU
  • The Political Economy of the European Union (GRS IR 760) (Course investigates major issues of European economic integration, including the Single Market and European Monetary Union, and explores the theoretical and practical problems of integration. It also considers the crisis of the Euro and its consequences for European member-states’ economies and democracies.) – Unit on the Legal Aspects of the Unification Process and Legal Reform after the Euro Crisis
  • North Atlantic and European Security (IR 589) (Course examines post Cold War security environment in the North Atlantic and greater European context and explores threats to security, mechanisms in place, emerging institutions and initiatives, and challenges posed by changes since fall 1989.) – Unit on the Law of External Relations
  • Contemporary European Ethnography (AN 316) (Course approaches Europe and European societies through an exploration of significant social shifts: the creation of the European Union, the decline of the national welfare state, the rise of regionalist movements, and the socio-political transformation of post-socialist states.) – Unit on Freedom of Religion in EU Law
  • Additional modules to be developed in collaboration with colleagues in the College of General Studies, and in particular in the departments of Political Science and International Relations
