Don’t You Just Love a Good Pop Song?

Some mid-week fun!  You may have already seen (and heard) DJ Earworm’s mashup/remix (or commentary) on the last year in pop music in the United State of Pop:

Peace.

I hope this won’t be disregarded as too serious a post to follow a celebration of pop…I just wanted to point something out that we’ve been talking about a lot in my philosophy class…

Is this a harmless mashup of the years pop music or a disturbing set of images of men and women? I mean, think about it. T-pain throwing money at the camera: Shop Boyz bouncing on a bed as women crawl at their feet: Fergie, Beyonce, Rehanna, and more dressed only in underwear. Perhaps most disturbing are the images of real people that follow the music videos. These young people take these artists very seriously, paying homage to their videos’ passing and even waving goodbye. I’m worried my generation has become apathetic toward the images in our favorite music videos. We aren’t worried about the portrayals of masculinity (specifically African American Masculinity), and femininity (specifically the African American female body) in these videos.

I’m not suggesting pop music shouldn’t be celebrated. There are some great songs in this mashup! I just hope young men and women recognize how these images and others (Nelly’s “Tip Drill,” anyone?) can be harmful to our images of each other and ourselves.
