This year, Lou Pride will put the “Rock & Roll” in Tech, Drugs and Rock & Roll—the blues singer will perform with Boston University’s own professor of music, Victor Coelho, and put some soul into the entrepreneurial spirit of the event.

A Chicago native, Pride sang in the choir of his local church as a child, but began his musical career after he left the army in the 1970’s. “Lou really does classic blues. He’s one of those singers who really keep the whole thing alive,” says Coelho. “His blues is very tuneful and lyrical—all the songs are about love.” Penning hits such as “I’m Comu’n Home in the Morn’un” and working with greats such as Curtis Mayfield, Lou Pride made—and is still making—R&B history through his numerous musical accomplishments.

Lou Pride has sung at Boston University on multiple occasions, as his friendship with Victor Coelho created multiple opportunities for them to perform together. “Victor’s a very down to earth guy,” says Lou, “he’s very nice and [he’s] a guitar wonder.” They were introduced by a mutual friend while Coelho taught as an assistant professor in Calgary, and the two hit it off immediately. “He’s got a big heart,” says Coelho, “It’s always a pleasure to play with Lou.”
