Don’t even think about suing me!

One of my students sent me this CRAZY article about a student suing her professor over a grade. There is always more to the story, as there is here. The most insane part of it all is that the judge denied the professor’s motion to dismiss the complaint.

Uh oh, I better hire a lawyer!

I didn’t even know an issue like this could even be brought to court! It seems to me like the zero out of twenty five points was a little bit harsh, but if the professor is able to justify it then the student should have just accepted it and moved on. I also think that she is using the gay marriage issue as a way to legitimize her claim of retaliation. Overall, I cannot believe this issue even made it as far as it did in the court system.

This goes along with our discussion last class about frivolous lawsuits since $1.3 million for a case like this is ridiculous. I agree that the 0/25 for participation needs to be justified by the professor considering this is the only student at Lehigh to get this grade. Although we don’t know how she behaved in class, the premise of suing a professor for a grade as well as trying to prove this grade has ruined her career is absurd. I don’t get why the court didn’t dismiss this.

Not sure if you recall from my paper that I am from Milan, Italy. In Italy, just like in all of Europe, Americans are known for bringing the most unique lawsuits. There is a notion that Americans love suing just for the sake of it. I feel like this somehow relates to the video about the “hot coffee lawsuit” we watched in class. Both are examples of lawsuits that are extremely unlikely to occur outside the US

If the entire class were to get together and sue you, would that be a class-action (HAHA) lawsuit? Are you allowed to be your own lawyer?

Very funny! And yes, if you all bring a class action against me, I will represent myself. 🙂
