BU Men’s Water Polo finished their season in historical fashion with their best ever finish, earning 2nd place in New England.

The weekend began with the 3rd-seeded Terriers defeating the 6th-seeded Wesleyan Cardinals 9-5. It wasn’t the best performance, but it was enough to see BU through to the semifinal match against defending New England champions Dartmouth College.

The match against Dartmouth was a tense, nail-biting affair, which saw the Terriers grab an early lead and fight relentlessly to hold on to it. BU never lost its lead, but Dartmouth hung tough the entire game, and the game ended 8-7. The win vs. Dartmouth was BU’s first victory over the Big Green in program history, and guaranteed BU a spot in the championship game for the first time.

The championship game was another edition of the B-Line rivalry, with BU facing the undefeated Eagles of Boston College. Boston College grabbed the lead off a penalty shot, and scored their next two goals on 6-on-5 powerplay opportunities. After a hard-fought 1st half, the score read 4-2 in BC’s favor. The second half saw BC take further advantage of powerplay opportunities, with 5 of their 9 total goals coming from man-advantages. The final score read 9-2 in favor of BC, but the Terriers left with their heads held high after a tough performance and history-making weekend.

The Men's Water Polo team continued a recent trend of successful weekends with victory in another scrimmage and volunteering experience alongside the BU Women's Water Polo team.

On Friday, October 3rd, BU hosted Northeastern University for a friendly scrimmage at BU's FitRec Center. Highlights include: 5 goals for graduate student Curtis Hon, 4 goals netted by freshman Blake Hallisey, and a hat trick (3 goals) from senior George Skoufalos. A standout 2nd quarter featuring 4 blocks and an assist from senior goalie Ron Glandian helped the Terriers forge a lead, and a combined team effort from everyone on the squad saw the Terriers through to victory. Final score: Boston University 18 - Northeastern University 13.

On Saturday, October 4th, members of the club teamed up with counterparts from the women's team to cheer on and volunteer at the 3rd Annual Run Like an Antelope 5K, benefitting Metastatic Breast Cancer Research conducted at UMASS Medical School. The early drive out to Worcester, MA was worth it, as everyone involved had a good time supporting a great cause.

The Men's Water Polo came out undefeated from their first New England Division tournament of the season, posting wins over Middlebury College, Yale University, Wesleyan University, and the University of Connecticut.

Medical student Curtis Hon led the Terriers in scoring through the first game, posting 3 goals in an 11-6 win over Middlebury. Freshman Blake Hallisey contributed 4 steals on defense to keep BU on top.

Hallisey continued his breakout weekend in BU's 17-12 win over Yale, scoring 5 goals and posting a whopping 7 steals. Junior Joshua McDonough continued his usual productivity on both offense and defense, by chipping in 4 goals and 2 steals to ensure the Terriers' victory.

Curtis Hon continued his excellent form in the 9-4 win over Wesleyan, notching 4 goals and dishing out 1 assist. Senior Sean Hughes had his share of the distribution with 2 assists, while also demonstrating his trademark defensive prowess.

BU's last game of the tournament saw the Terriers notch a 12-2 victory over league newcomers UConn. Sophomore goalie Thomas Willwerth had a rock solid game with 8 saves and 3 steals to keep BU's foundation strong. The Terriers thus had the opportunity to explore their squad depth, with junior Stephen Yale posting 2 goals, and sophomore Cameron Curtiss registering a hat trick.

All in all, it was a very promising start to the season for BU, with tougher tests yet to come during the season, namely against New England heavyweights Boston College and Dartmouth College.

We're off today to Middlebury, VT for the first New England Division tournament of the season! Due to Harvard University's decision to drop out of the division, the schedule for the weekend has changed. We will be facing Middlebury, Yale, and Wesleyan on Saturday, and UConn on Sunday. We're looking forward to victory!

The Men's Water Polo team emerged victorious from a scrimmage against Metro Masters on Sunday, 9/21/14 with a score of 8-7. The game was another important stepping stone in BU's preparations for the CWPA New England Division season.

Scoring contributions from junior Josh McDonough, medical student Curtis Hon, and senior Drew Mutafyan, all with 2 goals apiece, led the Terriers through a strong performance. Junior Kevin Chu, with BU's lone goal in the 4th quarter, sealed the win after a tightly contested second half.

After the standard 4-quarter scrimmage, 2 additional quarters of exhibition were played, with all members of the Terriers' squad receiving valuable game time and experience. Freshman Blake Hallisey and sophomore William Pearson each scored 1 goal during these two exhibition quarters.

Boston University's first competitive games of the season come next weekend at the CWPA New England tournament being hosted by Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT. The Terriers will take on the hosts Middlebury College, local rivals Boston College, and defending New England champions Dartmouth College on Saturday, 9/27. On Sunday, BU will face Yale University to round out the weekend.

The BU Men's Water Polo team lost a hard fought contest to Boston College 9-7 on Sunday, September 14. The team will look to improve upon this result as the New England Division season looms ahead.

Junior Josh McDonough opened the scoring for the game early in the first quarter with a precise lob that caught the opposing goalie out of position. Strong team defense, led by steals and interceptions from McDonough and Freshman Blake Hallisey carried BU to the end of the first quarter with a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles of Boston College held the Terriers scoreless in the second quarter, with the halftime score reading 3-2 to the visitors from BC.

The third quarter saw momentary lapses in BU's defense lead to four goals from Boston College after the break, with the Terriers scoring two during the quarter as well.

With the fourth quarter beginning at 7-4 to the Eagles, seniors Drew Mutafyan and Avery Watterworth set out to reverse the Terriers' fortunes by scoring three important goals; however, Boston College added two during the last period to bring the final score to 9-7.

Also contributing to the scoring for Boston University were graduate student Curtis Hon and senior George Skoufalos.

Summer is over and another school year is upon us! With that, of course, comes another season of competition for BU Men's Water Polo. After a long summer of training from our team members all over the country, we're back at it on campus gearing up for a fiercely contested season of competition in the CWPA New England Division. Hard to believe that the summer is almost over. Our men have been working hard this summer and we're hungry for water polo!

The NCAA Women's Water Polo Championship took place on May 10-12, 2013 at Harvard University. Eight teams participated, six of which were conference champions from the MPSF, WWPA, SCIAC, CWPA, MAAC, and Big West, joined by two at-large bids.

With the conclusion of final exams, members of the Boston University Men's Water Polo team spent the day at Harvard's Blodgett Pool experiencing a display of top-notch water polo.

The first game of the day was for seventh place between Pomona-Pitzer and Iona. It was a tightly contested match as points were traded back and forth. A winner was not decided until the very end when a player from Pomona-Pitzer unleashed a devastating buzzer-beater to seal the victory. Final Score: 13 - 12 (Pomona-Pitzer)

The excitement continued in game two, where Princeton and UCSD fought for fifth place. UCSD had led for majority of the game but Princeton staged an excellent comeback that was unanswered by UCSD. Final Score: 12- 10 (Princeton)

The competition heated in the third place game between Hawaii and UCLA. While UCLA finished on top by a sizable margin, it was a fierce battle nonetheless. Hawaii demonstrated exquisite ball-handling skills with quick, clean passes. Hawaii's number 5 led the team with five astonishing goals. While UCLA did come out on top, Hawaii had the last laugh as a skillfully placed lob met the back of UCLA's net at the final second. Final Score: 13 - 8 (UCLA)

The championship game between No.1 USC and No.2 Stanford was an absolute thriller that kept everyone on the edge of their seats through to the FIFTH overtime period. Stanford stole the early lead with two goals to end the first quarter at 2-0. At half, Stanford maintained the two goal lead and was still ahead after the third quarter. USC had managed to pull ahead for a one goal advantage in the fourth quarter. So, with the clock ticking down in the final possession, Stanford drew an ejection for a man-up opportunity. A first attempt was made as a pass from the wing connected with a backhand redirect from the post. The goalie handled this as the ball was knocked out of bounds. Stanford maintained composure, working the ball around the perimeter. In the last seconds of the game, the ball found its way inside again but this time to the back of the net. Tie game.
As if the game had not been close enough, the winner of this game remained undecided even after the double overtime periods. It was not until the fifth overtime (sudden death) that USC snatched the victory on a shot off of a foul.

As the spring season wraps up and finals wind down, we are greeted with sunshine and warm breezes. Summer is coming...along with MORE WATER POLO!
Locals on the Boston University Men's Water Polo team look forward to practicing with the Metro Water Polo team in Cambridge this summer.
While Club Sports and affiliated programs are not officially running during the summer, rest assured the BUMPolo men will be working hard.
