We’re taking a road trip…

Every so often we like to get off campus and explore the New England Region.  Boston is home to so many great restaurants, from large chain restaurants to that hole in the wall joint that only a few people know about.  But that’s not where we’re going on our field trip, no we usually like to take the trip a litter farther from the city and a little off the beaten path.  We like to head to Dairy Country, dah, dah, dah!   Next week with special help from our partners at The New England Dairy Council we thought we would take a trip to The Smith’s Country Farm located in Winchendon.  The farm is only about 60 miles from campus which we don’t think is that bad, and you’ll see some beautiful country!  Actually it doesn’t matter how long it takes, because once we get there, we’re going to sample some awesome cheese thats made’s fresh!!  It is fresh, within minutes of milking their last cow that milk is used in their cheese.   The result is true farmstead cheese!  Smith’s Country Cheese produces, not only the original farmstead Gouda in a variety of flavors, but also cheddar in medium, sharp, and extra sharp … and there newest addition, Havarti. Anyone who recognizes the appeal of farm fresh milk will enjoy the rich and creamy flavor of there Gouda, Cheddar and Havarti cheeses. Unlike factory produced cheese, there Gouda, Cheddar and Havarti share much of the same characteristic quality, distinction and appeal as other hand-crafted culinary products or beverages.

On Wednesday April 13th from 8:30am – 1:30pm we are going to visit Smith’s Country Farm and we would love for you come along!  We have space available for the trip that will be leaving from campus at 8:30 on the 13th.  Please contact Sabrina – harpers@bu.edu for more info and to sign up.

We answer the call…

Recently there has been a lot of talk about having Food Trucks on the BU campus.  This is an issue that students, administrators and even elected officials have debated for years; we at Dining Services feel we should comment on this issue since it will in fact impact our business on campus and how the students are served.  First and foremost we want to make it clear that this is just an exploratory project, but we can say to you for the first time, that we have outlined a plan to bring Food Trucks to the Boston University Campus, and that plan has been accepted!!!

It's something we have been working on for over 2 years now, and finally after last week's closed-door hearing at the capital everything was approved.  The map above illustrates the route that the Food Truck will take. You will see that the Food Truck will actually be the BU Shuttle; we will just alternate carrying passengers and carrying food. It's quite simple really; here is how it will work as stipulated in our agreement with the city of Boston:  The BU Shuttle will leave the Medical Campus for the first run of the day and make the usually stops along the way through campus and then stop at Babcock Street.  There they will discharge any passengers and proceed to load up the BU Food Truck with supplies from the Fresh Food Co. at West Campus' kitchen. The menu will be very Spartan, plain deli meat sandwiches, bags of chips, bottled beverages, packaged cookies and a duck confit with a saffron dill sauce that will only be available between the SFA stop and Warren Towers stop. The BU Food Truck will then go up campus and make its way to Danielson Hall, here it will stop, just for a second and then honk its horn as it drives away leaving the Danielson residents to walk the 6 miles to campus! It will make one pass down Comm. ave and stop back at the Fresh Food Co. at West, here it will unload the supplies, hose down the inside of the bus, re-install the seats, take out the exhaust fans, and replace all the windows. Once that is complete it will proceed to pick up passengers at the Medical School campus only and take them to Huntington Ave where it will drop them off and return back to the shop for its daily maintenance inspection which is a required law by the city of Boston.

The BU Food Truck will accept Dining points only. We will however entertain any trades you may want to make but only and we repeat only for original Darth Maul figurines, no knock offs accepted! We hope you will take part in our inaugural run that will take place on Sunday April 3rd at 3:30am between Deerfield Street and Cummington Street and there will be no free giveaways.

We feel after the exhausting research we’ve done and the help the city of Boston has given us these are the best laid plans we could come up with.  We want you to enjoy the new BU Food Truck and to give us as little feedback as possible on it.  And finally… April Fools! We love You!

Spring Break, a week off, what to do?

The GSU is closing at 2:30 on a Friday, that can only mean one thing... either someone wearing a Chef Coat and tall white Chef Hat just walked across the seal in Marsh Chapel, or it's Spring Break!

Ah Spring Break week, a  week off from work... NOT!  No, we at Dining Services don't get the week off contrary to what many people think, no we try to be productive during the week, and that consists of PLANNING!   We plan for new menus, we plan for VCS, we plan for Freshman Fridays, we plan for Commencement, we plan our outfits, we plan like it's nobody's business!  And if our plan for planning during the week off works out to plan, then our plan was a successful plan and the plan for the rest of the semester should fall right into plan with our plans!

So as you leave campus for the week to go home and see family or to go off to some exotic location like South Padres Island Texas remember this... Drink plenty of water the following morning after a night out, turn over every 15 minutes when on the beach, and Mac "N" Cheese will be waiting for you at Warren when you return!

Have  a safe Break!

Shrimp Chips, we don’t need no shrimp chips!

For weeks the debate has been going on amongst the BU community. To eat Shrimp Chips or not to eat Shrimp Chips, that is the question! At the Fresh Food Company in West Campus they feature Shrimp Chips each week at one of their stations, and for some it's a hit and for others, it's a dud. It seems like every week Dining Services would get a message, "UGGH Shrimp Chips again"? or "Yeah Shrimp Chips are back"! So you see how we can get confused by all the hub bub? We recently consulted the Production Manager at West Campus Nadine Somma and Ms. Somma states that Shrimp Chips will continue to stay on the menu at West. So I guess this article is done right? Give me a second and I will try to make it longer... Nope, couldn't do it, Shrimp Chips will stay at West! Lastly, if you don't like Shrimp Chips, try some other chips be they potato or nacho at other stations at Fresh Food Co., they always offer a wide variety of extras like that.

Iron Chef at Warren Towers – Thursday

The next to last installment of our Student Iron Chef Competition comes to a tilt tonight at Warren Towers!
We have six student teams made up of some of the best student chefs to come out of 700 Comm. Ave! Sure you're thinking, how many student chefs have come out of 700 Comm. Ave? To tell you the truth, not that many, but that's neither here nor there, these students are good! The Dining Services' Chefs De Partie or Interns got a first hand sampling of some of the treats, and man, they were raving about them. Plus, the sound check is going on as we type and they are blowing the roof off the joint, well at least the curtains are swaying.
The Dinner begins at 5pm so get their early to get a good seat! We'll also have some celebrity judges on hand judging the contestants. Dean Elmore and John Battaglino will be holding the coveted job of tasting each dish when finished, so you can guess that security will be pretty tight around these two Culinary Magristates as they enter the building.
Stop by and enjoy a great meal and some great music at Warren tonight, believe us it's worth it.

We’ve arrived…

Thanks for visiting our new blog, we’ve finally arrived!
This little Blog of ours will be something like a Shepherd’s Pie. When making a Shepherd’s Pie you take some corn, peas, mashed potatoes, maybe some onions, add in a bunch of beef or chicken, and then put it in a pie shell, cover and bake. Voila!
That’s basically what we’ll be making here; we’ll have some posts from our Sustainability Coordinator, our Directors from different dining locations plus some students making posts about their dining experiences. We will also have posts about past events and finally some insight or behind the scenes look-ins to the BU Dining world. Not a bad dinner, huh?
We’ll keep this first post short since we probably lost you at Shepherd’s Pie (vegetarian only). We welcome any comments or suggestions you may have and we invite you to submit topics you’d like to hear about. We’re also looking for writers, some “in the field” reporters that are itching to get their blog on… Ok we’ve ruined it by saying “Get their blog on” so that’s it.

Take Care and Mangia!
