Visual storytelling with dynamic design to be fall workshop focus

From newspapers to yearbooks to magazines and online publications, staffs and advisers must understand how to attract readers and guide them to read stories.

Visual storytelling with dynamic design will be the focus of the New England Scholastic Press Association’s fall workshop Friday, Nov. 1 at Boston University’s College of Communication.

Laura Schaub, national education director for Lifetouch Yearbooks, will give the presentation.

Having served as executive director of the Oklahoma Interscholastic Press Association at the University of Oklahoma where she taught courses in typography, design, desktop publishing and photography, she previously taught journalism and advised student publications at Charles Page High School in Sand Springs, OK.

She is a Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Key recipient and a former Dow Jones Newspaper Fund distinguished adviser. She was inducted into the National Scholastic Journalism Hall of Fame, served as president of the Columbia Scholastic Press Advisers Association for two terms and chaired the CSPA Judging Standards and Practices Committee.

She has been presenting sessions at NESPA’s annual conference for more than 10 years.

In the workshop from 10-noon she will show how strong, storytelling photos, when placed strategically on pages, pull readers into those pages and direct them toward the written words.

After she talks about designing pages for newspapers, magazine and yearbooks, she will show two or three examples of video stories.

Then there will be opportunities for participants to work in groups and create story packages.

Staffs and advisers from all student media are welcome to attend the workshop. Tuition is $25 per person.

The deadline for registration is Friday, Oct. 25.
