The Run-Up,” is attracting the youngest audience of any Times product ever surveyed, and one that spends far more time on it than most readers do on stories. When “The Run-Up” first came out in August, it reached No. 2 on iTunes, the digital shelf on which most podcasts are found, and it remains high on the charts.

Still Processing,” hosted by Wesley Morris and Jenna Wortham, is so unconstrained, edgy and playful that’s it’s hard to believe it’s a product of the Times newsroom.

This isn’t great, but it’s an example of journalism gymnastics. DSLR in one hand, managed to reach my phone, turn on voice memo, hold it out with the other and get some audio. I don’t recommend it. Dumb luck. I blew another interview the same day

Use social media to:

Find story ideas
Reporting: Find human and paper sources for stories
Monitor the news/beat
Publish the news
Share with followers — Why are they following and what do they want to know.
Engage with readers/followers
Don’t try to use every platform all the time. Pick a few.
Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are essentials.

Greeting JO304 S17. Here’s a few new multimedia projects to check out:

STORY: Segregation Now

This story includes a video, a timeline, an interactive map and data visualization tool, and a collaborative section, Six Words. Each element tells a different aspect of the story. Together, they allow the reader to objectively understand the issue and also empathize with the people affected by school segregation.

I”m not sure I like the photo scroll at the top. It looks good, but takes a while to get to the story.

Multimedia for PBS documentary: The viewer is enter the website through a mix of texts on alternating backgrounds displaying information about the characters in the videos. Easily digestible quotes from the inmates and statistics about incarceration or the foster care system, for example, are provided in large font on intertwining black and off-white backgrounds and including full bleed photos.

Ghost Boat: Today, it’s been over a year since the boat went missing. Segen’s fate, and that of the other passengers, remains a mystery. Almost nobody has done anything to try to figure out what happened.
