Workshop Description

In this workshop, you will create a beautiful card using decorative papers from all over the world.  To create the card, you will use a paper layering technique called iris-folding in which strips of paper are folded lengthwise and then layered in succession to produce a pattern.  The method is referred to as iris-folding because the concentric layering of paper strips produces an image that resembles the iris of an eye.  However, quilt-like designs can also be created by altering the layering process.

The overall effect of the composition is influenced by the colors and textures of the papers used.  In particular, Japanese papers that contain hints of gold, silver or copper and marbled papers provide subtle drama to the final design.

Card samples and books on iris-folding will be available for ideas and inspiration.

Materials to bring to workshop:

  • Pair of scissors sharp enough to cut paper- 7-inch length is ideal, but standard 9-inch office scissors are fine
  • Standard office tape dispenser- you’ll need a dispenser with a solid support so you can easily tear strips with one hand
