The director and faculty get several requests from students to write a letter of recommendation to study at a doctoral program. Note: Boston University Metropolitan College does not offer any doctoral program as you might know already. Of course other colleges at BU offer such advanced degrees.
Here is a checklist I have created for you to review. Do you qualify for consideration?
Reasons I Would Write a Letter of Recommendation (and I speak for most faculty in the program as well):
- The student has a strong GPA (3.7 or higher)
- The student specifically has an A grade in courses related to the doctoral program of interest.
- I know the student well from having them in two classes.
- The student shows strong critical thinking, writing, and analytical skills.
- The student participates actively in class discussions and asks insightful questions in class.
- The student produced an outstanding research paper or term project.
- The student has relevant research, internship, or work experience in the field.
- The student communicates professionally and articulately.
- The student has clear research interests aligned with the doctoral program.
- The student understands his/her motivation for doing doctoral degree.
- The student has clearly defined research interests
- The student is applying to programs that are not a stretch given their qualifications.
- The student is realistic about admissions to doctoral study, recognizing that 98% of the applications will get rejected.
