Friday 8th, 2015, First World Energy Exercise at ITBA

Last Friday we did our first World Energy Exercise at ITBA. This workshop features an interactive role playing gaming in which 6 groups: energy supply, energy eficiency, population and consumption, climate hawks, carbon pricing, agriculture and land use, negotiate a strategic plan to migrate to a sustainable climate friendly economy.

Fifty people participated in the workshop, and although the workshop started at 4 pm and formally ended at 8 pm, many people remained talking in the classroom till 9:30 pm!!!

To do the workshop we translated the briefing materials to Spanish during the last months of 2014. We intended to do the World Energy in Costa Rica  during the Latam Chapter System Dynamics conference at INCAE Business School.

The World Energy Exercise is being designed and improved by Climate Interactive, mainly by Drew Jones.

After two negotiation rounds, Drew Jones joined the workshop through skype for the workshop debriefing.

Although there are many issues to iron, and the World Energy exercise is still under development, it generated in the participants an impressive desire to start climate change reduction initiatives.

I will add pictures to this post!

My www.ingfracassi.com.ar site got hacked! But now is again working…

Some years ago I designed a website about some of the Career Planning and Human Resources services that I was doing in Buenos Aires.  The site needs urgent improvement, and I must confess that it is designed with the old "pixel perfect" paradigm in mind.

To my great regret, I forgot to update the wordpress blog and the site got hacked! It was an experience getting my www.ingfracassi.com.ar up again and working.

I did several things:

  1. In the first place, I asked the hosting services provider to stop showing the site till I could repair it. Three months passed.... and finally I got enough time to correct things.
  2. I tried to delete the wordpress files, but it didn't work. Most files were deleted, but some remained.  I asked the hosting service help on this issue.
  3. I used my google webmaster account and checked the error log. As three months had passed, obviously there were no errors to correct, so I continued reading google's documentation  about how to resolve this kind of issues.
  4. I changed my hosting service password and also the MySQL database password.
  5. I then loaded my clean html files, but still got a red warning message from google.
  6. I downloaded the latest wordpress.org code, and reinstalled wordpress with clean code.
  7. Then I deleted many wordpress users whom I did not know anything about them. I left only the trusted users, and changed wordpress settings so no one could register except trusted users.
  8. Finally I in google webmaster tools, I asked google to review my site.
  9. Now everything seems to be working ok!

Cheers!!!

Our experience faciliating the World Climate Exercise!!!! – Interview by Climateinteractive.org

I was recently interviewed by the people at www.climateinteractive.org

Here is a link to the interview!

"Facilitating the World Climate Exercise - Interview - Eduardo Pedro Fracassi"

I must say that it took much time to get the pictures right, my sister Maria Rosa helped with her camera and knowledge. The interview helped me order my thoughts and reflect about what we have done.

We are fairly advanced with a paper we have presented about our experience facilitating more than 17 World Climate Exercises in Argentina and Costa Rica.

We try to have participants enjoy the exercise as much as possible, and sometimes it is difficult to stop them negotiating and begin the debriefing.

Early 2013 we translated the World Climate briefing materials to Spanish so they can be used by all Spanish speakers in the world!

We hope this work helps to build awareness about Climate Change and Global Warming in Latin America and the Spanish speaking international community.

Finished migrating namikoshibas.com site to HTML5

We have just finished migrating www.namikoshibas.com static pages from HTML 4  to HTML 5 so that they can be easily browsed in a mobile phone / smartphone.

More than 27 English language pages were updated.

We hope that in this way anyone around the world might browse our page with his / her smartphone and contact us because of our shiba inu dogs.

For this tasks we used the bluefish 2.2.5 linux html editor which for the moment works great.

Now the whole www.namikoshibas.com site is fully mobile friendly with a responsive design.  Our next step is to update the site's blogs to wordpress.org. technology.

We leave you a beautiful picture of two shiba inu puppies, one red and the second white. Enjoy!!!

Improving student feedback!

This time I have changed the way I write feedback to students. Typically, students highly value the feedback notes that they receive with their grades. After checking student course feedback forms, I realized that some top performing students needed and expected extensive feedback.

It seemed that they were not happy with being told that they had accomplished all expectations for a certain assignment with flying colours, and that they needed something more.

So I decided to search for successful models for writing feedback, and after some research began including the following sections in each feedback post:

  1. An "overall" section, which includes the most important points successfully accomplished by the students, including valuable quotes from his / her work.Free Overall View On Athens With Tops Acropolis Stock Photography - 14353432
  2. A "things to improve" section, with points that the student did not comply according to expectations, and that she or he must improve.Time Management Royalty Free Stock Photos - 34372278
  3. A "Suggestions for further advancing your work in future assignments" section, with goals that the student must achieve in the future in order to enhance his / her performance.Free Chess Concept. Stock Photo - 14373540

I am eager to see whether this format brings more student satisfaction!

Spanish part of the ecommerce site with responsive design!

We have finished recoding the Spanish pages of the ecommerce project website www.namikoshibas.com  from html 4 into html 5 and CSS 3 so that the website ow can be easily browsed in a smartphone.

Using html 5 and CSS 3 for a responsive design changes the website design paradigm from "pixel perfect" to "a design that can be used on any type of device".

I am very proud of this acomplishment, as I am an engineer, not a programmer and I had to learn many  new things and concepts. These new concepts will surely help me better facilitate AD 737 and AD 648.  There was a 20 % improvement on the number of facebook likes referring to the www.namikoshibas.com site.

Here are the steps that I followed:

1) I spoke with a student of systems engineering at ITBA. He told me that I should use responsive desgin using html 5 and CSS3. He showed me a site that he had developed himself and the results were awesome!

2) I watched several youtube tutorials on responsive design. I also consulted several pages on responsive design.

3) I chose the simplest page in the website and started translating it from html 4 to html 5, using the bluefish html editor. The Kompozer opensource web authoring project has stopped, I think because its main feature is that it is WYSIWYG, "what you see is what you get", and this "pixel perfect" vision now has changed to responsive design, allowing for any page to be browsed on a variety of different screens: desktops, laptops, netbooks, smartphones, and so on....

4) More than 70 versions of the CSS 3 code followed, till I had the page that I wanted.

5) Finally, I migrated the rest of the pages  This was somewhat mechanical, it was very fast compared to step 4!

I am now working on the English pages!!! I am trying to get these pages finished soon.

Cheers,

Eduardo

A project to improve AD 648 online facilitation!

Building an ecommerce site for my sister's hobby: breeding cute shiba inu puppies!

How it all began!

Some years ago I started facilitating AD 648 Introduction to eCommerce online course. Students had to complete several valuable assignments, one of them was designing and building an ecommerce site with dreamweaver.

So I decided to make my own ecommerce site, I selected as project building a site for my sister's hobby of breeding cute shiba inu puppies! This project would surely help me improve my work as facilitator for the AD 648 course!

Shiba Inu Saphie with her new three puppy litter

Shiba Inu Saphie with three newborn puppies, one red male, a white male and a white female.

Diagnosing the old site:

My sister had an old site built by a friend, but it had not been updated for a long time, and using the tools taught  in AD 648 was a great learning opportunity, and also a big bussiness opportunity as well. No other shiba inu dog breeder had an interesting website in Argentina.

So I spent some time with Maria Rosa, my sister, drawing sketches on how the site should look like and which functionalities she needed. The overall purpose of the site was to sell cute shiba inu puppies in Buenos Aires, Argentina and if possible, also genetic exchange puppies with other breeders in neighbouring countries.

A new fresh look and "how do we want our customers to feel about what we sell?":

The changes to the www.namikoshibas.com were a great improvement. The look and feel was much improved with the text much more easier to read. A css cascading style sheet file was created so that titles, headings, italics and the rest of the text was homogenous throughout the site.

Another important change came from answering these simple questions:

  • 1) What are we selling?
  • 2) What do our customers pay for?

These questions helped us a lot, because the first thing that you see when you open the  home page is obviously a shiba inu puppy, or the services that we offer: doggie day care in Buenos Aires and genetic exchange stud services for approved shiba inu females.

White Shiba Inu puppy with a tired face!

One of Saphie's 2013 white shiba inu puppies looking a little tired and about to sleep! How could we wake him up?

Building a multilingual Spanish - English site

From the start with thought to achieve a worldwide audience for our new site. So we decided to build a multilingual Spanish - English site, so breeders from other countries could learn about us in order to exchange puppies with the purpose of improving our shiba inu bloodlines and stock.

Coding the new site Dreamweaver vs. Kompozer

I could not get hand to a dreamweaver html site edition tool, so I downloaded Kompozer open source html editing tool to start coding.  My computer was a dual booting Windows and Linux Ubuntu machine, and being familiar with open source free tools, I decided to try Kompozer. You may download it from Kompozer's web authoring site.

Nowdays this kind of expertise is not so important for the ecommerce course because soon afterwards we started using blogger, and lately switched to wordpress, the same technology that drives this webpage that your are now reading. But every learning experience helps, and students frequently have issues with html so this html knowledge is always very handy.

Continuing with our little story, I must say that I am not a programmer, but I had learnt basic Fortran and Basic coding while studying engineering in the 80s. And I love to write, so on we go. I had to learn about hosting services, and using FTP tool to upload our newly designed pages! I decided to keep the webhosting service that my sister's site had. After all, if something works, why change it? There should be a compelling reason.  At first I used the gFTP tool that Linux ubuntu has.

Hosting site linux style file permissions

When I first loaded my first html pages I had to learn about  hosting site file permissions. Typically, web hosting services use linux servers, so the files that you upload to the server adquire linux file system permissions. There are several linux file system permissions, but a safe one for beginners is 755, which permits visitors to browse your page but not to change it.  There are many tutorials and explanations on this issue available searching through the web!

Developing Content for namikoshibas.com!

Getting content from my sister was a big issue. She is an expert amateur photograph, but her picture files are so big that copying and hosting pictures needed much much thought.

Some of my sister's pictures are so beautiful! We have shared some pictures and they were very well received. But the truth is that my sister never had enough time to produce content. So when months passed without new content, I started to develop content myself with my camera, taking pictures of my shiba inu female dog, beautiful Suko.

Suko's story

Suko was born in Europe, she won enough points in Holland to achieve champion status, and then went to live to Canada, were she live with Katja, an experienced and well known shiba inu breeder who later exchanged Suko with my sister Maria Rosa. So Suko is a foreigner. Katja is a very strict dog breeder, and taught Suko to behave herself and and to follow my orders.

I love to teach, so I taught Suko some tricks. Here I share with you a video that I did myself for my sister's namikoshibas.com site!

Obviously it is an amateur one person video filmed with one hand while the other sent small nice food tips to Suko! 🙂 But I enjoyed it very much. I added a youtube musical background of Italian Mandolin music playing "funiculi - funicula".

Other content that I regularly include are pictures of our dogs during vacations, treks, and in shows where I go with my camera and use it to take pictures and videos.

More site content

We also added other interesting pages about the story of the shiba inu breed in Japan, searched through the web for the standard of the shiba inu breed, found and interesting and moving shiba inu movie similar to the famous "Hatchi" film by Richard Geere on an Akita Inu dog faithful to his owner after the owner passed away.  The shiba inu movie is called "A tale of Mari and Three puppies."  It tells the story of Mari, a shiba inu female dog who helps his owners after a violent earthquake in Japan. The people are rescued, but the shiba inu is left behind. After 2 weeks the owners return looking for Mari and find her nurturing three newborn shiba inu puppies!

Going live with the new site

I was very very excited when the new namikoshibas.com site whent into action for the first time. The surprising thing that was that we had done things so well that our site turned first page in google searches in Argentina when you searched for "cachorritos shiba inu", that is "shiba inu puppies" when translating it into English.

What I learnt and how it helped me while facilitating AD 648 Introduction to eCommerce!

  • This learning experience changed the way I facilitate MET AD 648, I think that my skills and competencies were greatly improved.
  • This project centered personal learning experience also opened me the way to help Prof. Kanabar with AD 737 Innovative Marketing Techniques, which relates to SEO, email marketing campaigns and other related and very powerful tools.

Finally, I think that everyone with the interest, courage, ingeniousness, curiosity, ability should enjoy building a site on a subject that he or she loves. "The heart speaks the true story".

Enjoy!
