This page will have assignments for my section of the 005 core class.

 

The assignments are listed in reverse chronological order.

 

Thursday, August 15:

Final Project– oral presentation due

5-10 minutes plus Q/A

Criteria for grading:

A total of 36 points:

a) Content (relevance, organization)                                          8
b) Vocabulary (appropriateness)                                                  4

c) Grammar  (appropriate structures)                                         4

c) Pronunciation (clarity/volume, fluency)                               8

d) Delivery (eye contact, posture/gestures, graphics )         8- 12

You may use PowerPoint if you wish.

Plan on using the board if you do not use a computer.

You may not read your presentation, from a paper or the screen.

 

For Tuesday, August 13:

Final project: Written assignment

An essay, report, or research paper

Length:  2-4 pages long, double spaced
with a list of sources; with a cover page
Essay–Read one article related to your topic, and write a persuasive essay about your topic, with your point of view.  For the essay you need to cite a minimum of one article you have read–within and after the essay.
Report–Read an article, and report on what the article says, in summarized form.
Cite the source within (in-text) and at the end of the report.
Research Paper–Choose a topic of interest to you, one that you can find sources on.
For the research paper  you will need to list any outside source(s) used– separately, at the end.
A minimum of two sources is required.
You can check OWL  (The Online Writing Lab)  on the CELOP Website–under “Current Students” < ESL Links<General Reference.
APA format — for the sciences, technology

Write an essay about global cooperation.

You can refer to pp. 133-134 in Q Skills to help prepare.

 

For Thursday, Aug. 8:

1) In Q Skills:

Read pp. 117-124, pp. 126-134.

Do the ex. on pp. 117-124.

Check the Unit Assignment–pp. 133-134–and refer to p. 129–about organizing supporting ideas:  Plan and Write.

2)  Write an outline for an essay on global cooperation:  Why is global cooperation important?

You can focus on a) one of the fields on p. 110,

or

b) on the situation of the indigenous Guatemalans who came to the U.S. looking for a better life after experiencing violence and persecution in their own country,

or

c)on other reasons why global cooperation is important.

The essay is due on Friday, Aug. 9.

3) Read about immigration of Guatemalans to the U.S.

1. Assignment using online resources

The theme we are going to be discussing is global cooperation.

Some questions to keep in mind:

What does it mean?  Is it possible in the 21st century?  Is it possible to have globalization and global cooperation?

1) Paraphrase the first three to five paragraphs.

 

2) Write down what you consider to be the main points—in basic outline form.

 

3) Cite where you got the material—author, title, website

 

4) Then write a one- or two-paragraph response to the article.

Then write a response or reaction to the article—in two paragraphs—and be ready to tell the class your viewpoint.  You can use formal or informal discourse style.  Be sure to give your opinion on how global cooperation is treated in the article.

 

 

Some Vocabulary:

2. In Q Skills for Success:  Unit 5

Begin Unit 5:  pp. 109-116.

Read and do the exercises.

For Friday, Aug. 2:
1) Write a persuasive essay on one of these topics:
a) Write an essay in which you argue why personal tasks such as doing online shopping, looking at personal email, or making personal phone calls should or should not be permitted at work.    Refute one or two (opposing) arguments against your position.
Length:  4-5 paragraphs
Be sure to use at least one noun clause (See p. 77.).
Use some vocabulary from the unit–like on p. 81.
OR
b) P. 78 in Q SFS–R/W–Unit Assignment:
Select a leisure activity, and write an essay in which you argue “why it should or should not be considered work.”  Be sure to refute one or two (opposing) arguments against your position.  Use some vocabulary from the unit–like on p. 81.
Be sure to use at least one noun clause (See p. 77.).
Check your essay for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and spelling.
OR
c) A topic that you have a strong opinion about.
Be sure to refute one or two (opposing) arguments against your position.
Be sure to use at least one noun clause (See p. 77.).
2) Prepare for a test on Unit 1 of Q Skills R/W, and possibly some vocabulary and grammar from Unit 3.
3) Continue working on your final project.
Make your final choice of topic.
Find and start reading an article about your topic.
You can go to Mugar Library and speak with the reference/research librarian for assistance with finding articles.
For Thursday, Aug. 1:

1) In Q SFS–R/W (book):
Read pp. 78-81.
Do the exercises on pp. 73-74; 75–78
2) Start planning for the persuasive essay on Friday.
3) Begin studying for a test on Unit 1 of Q SFS–R/W.
4) Read “EPICAC,” and think about the questions.
5) Read this article, and think about the main idea(s):
For Thurs., Aug. 1:
For Tues., July 30:
1) Choose a topic of interest for the final writing project–an essay, brief research paper, or report/summary. Topics will need to be approved by the teacher.
Email your topic to me.
Writing project:
Length:  2-3 pages long
Frame your topic in the form of a question:
Ex.:
How can recycling or reusing items help protect our planet?
Why is global warming a pressing issue in the 21st century?
What is the impact of globalization on oil prices?
Why is it important for children to get proper nutrition and regular exercise at school and at home?
Essay–Read one article related to your topic, and write a persuasive essay about your topic, with your point of view.

The assignment for Friday, July 26 is as follows:
A) Review pp. 20-22 in Q Skills Reading and Writing 5.
Review pp. 20-22 in
Q Skills Reading and Writing 5. This has a model essay.
Look at Ex. A and B on p. 22.  Review Ex. A and B on p.p. 25-26 if you need to brainstorm a topic.
You can do an outline in your notebook.

Write a first draft of a process essay about one of these topics:The steps in a process that you are very familiar with, such as these examples: 

planning a trip; becoming a successful leader, athlete or student;

communicating with a mass audience such as using cell phones to communicate with a group of people, learning how to be a successful smart phone user, or becoming a skillful user of Twitter

An effective essay for this assignment has the following

1) at least four or five paragraphs, with one for each of the main points in the body of the essay
2) an introduction, with an optional “hook” to catch the readers’ interest or attentionhook = a question, a quotation, an unusually surprising statistic/fact, a serious or humorous anecdote, 

or setting a scene

c) a thesis statement that presents the main idea in the introduction (often near the end)

e) supporting details for each of the main stepsf) connecting (transition) words (like “first,” … “next,” or “finally”) linking ideas

g) a conclusion

 

Remember to indent the first paragraph, and double space as you type.

B) In Q Skills:  Read pp. 24-27.  On pp. 24-25:

We will do the grammar ex. together in class tomorrow.

Also, we will do the vocabulary ex. on pp. 18-19 together.

 

C) Finish reading the article on  Leila Belmahi.

You do not have to do more of the questions for tomorrow.

 

For Thurs., July 25:

1) Buy the Q Skills for Success Reading/Writing 5 book at Barnes and Noble, the BU Bookstore.

2) Review pp. 3-12.

3) Read  pp. 13-23 (top).
