Group Project—A Global Problem

You will be working in a group on a project about a global problem.  Each group will have four members, and the group members will divide the work so that two will focus on the global problem, and the other two will focus on solutions to the problem.

Schedule:                                                                                    Due Date:

B) Hand in some notes, a research question                      October 31

and an interview question.   You can do this

as a group if you wish.  Each group member

should include the items listed in B.

 

C) Submit a paragraph description of the group               November 5

project with a clear division of tasks among

the four project members, and a designated

technology tool for presentation.

 

D) Hand in a general outline of the presentation,            November 14

with group members designated as presenters.

 

E) Submit a photocopy of slides for the presentation.     November 17

 

F) Give the group project presentation.                              November 19

Each presenter:   2-5 minutes in length

Time for Q & A after each group presentation.

 

G) Hand in the questions and answers from                     November 21

the first group interview of an American about

your group project topic.

 

H) Turn in the poster for your group project.                   November 24

 

I)  Submit the questions and answers from the                December 3

second interview of an American about your

group project topic.

3) Be sure that you take care of the following:

A) Send a thank-you email from your group project members to the CELOP staff members–teachers, administrators, or student workers–whom you interviewed as part of the group project.   The group leader or another group member can do this.    Please send me a copy of the email.  This is an important final part of the project!

B) Write about at least one significant inventor, discoverer, or explorer from your country, culture, or religion, on one of the posters, in a sentence using the passive.  If you’d like, research a Native American, African-American or other immigrant to this country who made a famous invention, discovery, or exploration (example–George Washington Carver).

For Wed., Dec. 10:

1) Bring Pathways 4:  Listening, Speaking, and Critical Thinking  to class.

P. 192:  Read and think about “Before Viewing:  A and B.

2) Group Project Leaders:

Write a thank-you email message to both interviewees–Interview #1 and #2–and send me a copy.  If you wish me to check the messages before you sent them, that is OK but optional.

3) Bring an edible or potable (drinkable–non-alcoholic) item to class.  This will be a potluck.

Check with your classmates to make sure that you are not all bringing the same thing!

4) Leave G.S. 4 at home.  🙂

C) Research on the Internet at least one past or present-day inventor or discoverer/explorer from your native country.  If there are two or more students from your homeland in our class, contact the other(s) so that you look up different inventors and/or discoverers/explorers.  Write down a sentence for each one that you  read about, but do not just copy sentences.

Examples:

Thomas Edison, who was an American from Ohio with more than 1,000 U.S. patents, invented the motion picture camera, the phonograph, and the incandescent light bulb.

Neil Armstrong, who was an American astronaut from Ohio, was the first person to walk on the moon.

Sylvia Earle, who is an American oceanographer and marine biologist from New Jersey and is the National Geographic explorer-in-residence,  established a record for solo diving at a depth of 1,000 meters.

Amelia Earhart, who was an American aviator from Kansas, was the first woman to make a solo flight across the Atlantic.

 

We will be making posters about inventors and explorers/discoverers from the countries represented in our class.

Check A-18 to A-21 (#19-22) to see which verbs or adjectives are followed by a gerund,  by an infinitive, or  by either a gerund or an infinitive.

 

For Wed., Nov. 19:

Be prepared to give your group project presentations, with the aid of a technological tool like PowerPoint or Prezi.

Practice giving it within your individual 5-minute time limit, and within the group time limit of 20 minutes, not counting the Q & A afterwards.

Be ready to look around the audience while you occasionally check notes.  Do not just read from the screen or from a sheet of paper.

1) Bring in a written general description of your group project in a paragraph (one paragraph for the whole group), to include the following:

a) the aspects of the global problem that each group member is focusing on (Be specific about who will present about what.);

b) the technological tool(s) that you will use and need for your presentation (like PowerPoint or Prezi);

 

2) G.S. 4:

a) Read the “Editing” explanation on p. 256, and do Ex. D1 on pp. 256-257.

b) Keep working on the online grammar practice for G.S. 4–Chapter 13.
