1) Be ready to talk about Museum of Science exhibits and the movies that you viewed on Friday.

2) Be prepared to do a presentation about a famous person/character, mostly based on the questions.

You may have to do a little research about the person/character.

3) Start writing a journal entry about an aspect of your country–for  example, holiday, food, religion (s).

Read about the Museum of Science exhibits at mos.org, in preparation for a field trip to the museum.

For Thursday, August 7:

1) Bring the photocopied handout on WBUR.

2) Work on your “being a famous person/character” speech, about a celebrity who is living or dead.

Read about your topic.  You will have a chance to be an actor/actress and impersonate the celebrity.

You can use your imagination to answer some of the questions, including questions from your classmates.

3) Revise (retype) the comparison/contrast paragraph about two things, people, places, or ideas.

Fill in the blanks and answer the questions about the song.

2) For SOC:  In #25, “Fighting for the Forest”  (white handout — the new questions) do #1-5.

This is based on the story in SOC:  pp. 20-23.

2) In the grammar photocopy “Used to” about the Past:

Page 3:  c–Answer questions #1-5, about inventions.

3) Read a bit at mos.org and neaq.org about the Museum of Science and the New England Aquarium

to find out about the types of exhibits and movies at both museum.

(This assignment was made before the class decision about a field trip.)

4) Be sure to bring along the questions about the “The Housewife Spy.”

 

For Friday, August 1:

1) In SOC:   Read pp. 20-23.

2) Finish the journal–1/2-2 pages, double-spaced–about a movie that you like.

Be sure to say what kind of movie (genre) it is (science fiction, romantic comedy, horror movie, action movie), the setting (where and when it happens), who is in it (movie stars). and the basic plot (story).

For Friday, July 18

1) Be prepared to give a 2-4 minute speech about how to do a process or acquire (get) a skill that you know very well and are very good at.

2) Revise the paragraph description  of a student–Retype it with corrections.

3) Work on the first draft of a process paragraph.  If you wish, you can choose the same process topic that your speech is about.  Remember to use a topic sentence and use transition words for the steps.

4) In the new handout (photocopies) on Thursday about present perfect, read the grammar explanations (in boxes) on pp. 83-106.

5) Stories of Courage:  Begin reading the story about Mathew–the bottom of p. 7, pp. 8-9.

6)  JR:  Student Book–p. 91–Do Ex. 23.

 

 

For Thursday, July 17

1) Do the student survey with 1 or 2 students from a different class.  Be prepared to hand it in.

2) Stories of Courage:  Be sure to finish reading the story “Running for Her Life,” and answer the 12 questions that were on a photocopied handout that you already have.  You can work with another student on the questions if you wish.

3) Choose a “how-to” or process speech topic, and email the topic to me before class.  The reason for this is to avoid duplication of topics.

Be ready to give a brief–2-4 minute–speech about a skill or process that you know how to do well–for Friday, July 18.

Break the skill or process down into steps, and you will be teaching the class how to do it.

Examples:     how to make a certain kind of coffee; how to train a falcon, horse, or other animal;how to be a successful student; the process of learning how to play a certain sport; how to practice a certain kind of martial art; how to cook or make a particular type of food; how to drink tea; how to do a certain kind of dance; the wedding process; how to use a certain app on a cell phone, laptop, or tablet; the process of learning how to play a certain musical instrument; how to learn (how) to drive a car

3) Errors in Writing:

Check some of the sentences, and identify and correct the errors, if possible.

For Wednesday, July 16:

 

1) Student Survey–Interviewing a student not in the class, using the list of questions from last week.

Cost:   $70.00

2) Type a journal entry (writing passage) of 1/2 to 1 page long, double spaced, about any interesting, funny, or scary experience that you have had in Boston.  Include your impressions, comments, or opinion about the experience.  Give it a title, too.

This is informal writing, so do not worry about grammar, vocabulary, or spelling.  You may use contractions, like “doesn’t” or “she’s.”

A handwritten version will not be accepted.

(Let me know if you have a problem finding a computer.)

3) In Stories of Courage (SOC):

Read pp.(pages) iv-2.  (Of course, you may keep on [continue] reading if you wish!)

4) In #15–“Serious Attention”–read pp. 114-117.

Think about the main idea of p. 117.

1) Review the material about comparative adjectives and adverbs, and superlative adjectives and adverbs to prepare for a short test:

Photocopies (handouts):  #1 (white), #9 (green), #12 (white), andthe photocopy from today (Study Grammar Superlative Adjectives…)  You can look at the grammar explanations and exercises we did in class.

2) Start writing a journal entry–informal writing–about an interesting experience in your life.  It could be the same one as your speech or a different one.

 

 

For Thurs., July 10:

1) Be ready to give a short speech about an important experience in your life–a funny, scary, strange, or other one.  Tell your story and what you learned about life from that experience.

How long:  2-3 minutes

2) Write 10 sentences in the simple present perfect tense (preferably true sentences):

5 with “yet’ or “ever”

5 with “already”

3) Read “Finders Keepers” and do the exercises on p. 56.

 

 

For Wed., July 9:

1) Write a paragraph description about a classmate.  Use the questionnaire from the interview.

Type the paragraph, double spaced.

Give it a title.
