This page will have assignments for my section of the 005 class.

The assignments are listed in reverse chronological order.

For Tues., July 30:
1) Choose a topic of interest for the final writing project–an essay, brief research paper, or report/summary. Topics will need to be approved by the teacher.
Email your topic to me.
Writing project:
Length:  2-3 pages long
Frame your topic in the form of a question:
Ex.:
How can recycling or reusing items help protect our planet?
Why is global warming a pressing issue in the 21st century?
What is the impact of globalization on oil prices?
Why is it important for children to get proper nutrition and regular exercise at school and at home?
Essay–Read one article related to your topic, and write a persuasive essay about your topic, with your point of view.
Report–Read an article, and report on what the article says, in summary.
Research Paper–Choose a topic of interest to you, one that you can find sources on.
For the research paper and report, you will need to list any source(s) used separately, at the end.
For the essay you can cite an article you have read within the essay.
Quotations must in quotation marks.  The majority of the writing project should be paraphrased–in your own words.
You will have a total possible maximum of 16 points:

Read pp. 57-78.
Do the ex. on pp. 5-60, 63-65, 67-68, 71-72 .
4) Register on Q Online Practice.
Do Vocabulary and some Grammar exercises for Unit 1.
The assignment for Friday, July 26 is as follows:
A) Review pp. 20-22 in Q Skills Reading and Writing 5.
Review pp. 20-22 in
Q Skills Reading and Writing 5. This has a model essay.
Look at Ex. A and B on p. 22.  Review Ex. A and B on p.p. 25-26 if you need to brainstorm a topic.
You can do an outline in your notebook.

Write a first draft of a process essay about one of these topics:The steps in a process that you are very familiar with, such as these examples: 

planning a trip; becoming a successful leader, athlete or student;

communicating with a mass audience such as using cell phones to communicate with a group of people, learning how to be a successful smart phone user, or becoming a skillful user of Twitter

An effective essay for this assignment has the following

1) at least four or five paragraphs, with one for each of the main points in the body of the essay
2) an introduction, with an optional “hook” to catch the readers’ interest or attentionhook = a question, a quotation, an unusually surprising statistic/fact, a serious or humorous anecdote, 

or setting a scene

c) a thesis statement that presents the main idea in the introduction (often near the end)

e) supporting details for each of the main stepsf) connecting (transition) words (like “first,” … “next,” or “finally”) linking ideas

g) a conclusion

 

Remember to indent the first paragraph, and double space as you type.

B) In Q Skills:  Read pp. 24-27.  On pp. 24-25:

We will do the grammar ex. together in class tomorrow.

Also, we will do the vocabulary ex. on pp. 18-19 together.

 

C) Finish reading the article on  Leila Belmahi.

You do not have to do more of the questions for tomorrow.

 

For Thurs., July 25:

1) Buy the Q Skills for Success Reading/Writing 5 book at Barnes and Noble, the BU Bookstore.

2) Review pp. 3-12.

3) Read  pp. 13-23 (top).

Do the ex. on pp. 13, 15-17 (until the discussion questions); 18-19
