HOMEWORK–LAST CALL: Your argument essay, as well as all previous revisions and outstanding assignments are due in classnext Tuesday, April 17th. This is your LAST chance to get credit for assigned work. I will also be collecting your usage/grammar logs for the final time.
4.6.12 MLL: Final Outline of your Argument Essay: Use the attached document and choose either the Block or Point by Point Pattern. Due by Friday, April 7th.
4. 4.12 MLL: Timed Writing: Use the document below for today’s timed writing exercise. Please remember to do a word count after time is called and before you print it.
HW: Clarify and improve the development of your argument and outline it using either the Block or Point-by-Point method
we studied today. Bring a hardcopy of your outline to class — we will be working on your Argument essays in class.
3.27.12:MLL — Use the attached document to start developing your Argument Essay. As you will see, some
internet research is required. Be sure to save the completed document with your name and date when finished, and print out a hard copy to hand in.

3.22.12: **ROOM CHANGE** — for the next three weeks, on Thursdays we will meet in 258 and then MLL 255.
Timed Writing Assignment: download this document and use it to complete the timed writing.
When time is called, save and print out.
HW:1. Read pp. 113 – 115 in our textbook. How would you score this draft using the TOEFL scores we discussed in class?
2. In preparation for writing your own Argumentative Essay, do Activities 1 and 2 on pp. 111-112. Bring to class!
3.20.12: In class reading and exercise: Read the article on the benefits of bilingualism and highlight/underline all references to research; discuss the numerous ways that references to research are woven into the essay, paying particular attention to the verbs used;
MLL: Complete revision of your Cause/Effect essay (hard copy is due in class no later than Thursday);
Also due Thursday: Your grammar/usage error log.
3.8.12 Handouts:
1) Causes of Plagiarism (paraphrasing exercise)
2)Definition, Causes and Consequences: Brief Introduction to Plagiarism, its Causes, Consequences and Resolutionsread and note especially the detailed citation for this article and reference list at the end, identifying the sources this author used in putting this article together.
3.6.12: MLL and HW –Revise your Cause/Effect draft in response to my feedback and incorporate the further research you have done, making sure to identify your sources properly (list of references at the end and in the text). Hard copy due in class on Thursday. See this site for help and examples of how to format different types of references.
HW: Research (or further research) on either your general topic or one of your causes or effects — use the internet to find a reasonably detailed source of further information; print out that source, summarize the information in one paragraph (be sure to paraphrase!), and hand in both your summary and the printed copy of your source.
2.28.12: MLL — Based on your choice of EITHER a cause focus OR effect focus, use your graphic organizer and outline to
write the first draft of your Cause/Effect essay (5 paragraphs). Bring hard-copy to class, attached to your graphic organizers.
HW: Take this online quiz on Cause/Effect essays and email me your results (maks@bu.edu) as indicated at the end.

1.31.12: MLL — Summary and Reaction to From Dyslexia to Poetry (2 paragraphs): Hard copy due at the end of MLL
Format<— Use this format guide
1. Summarize Philip Schultz’s essay in 1 well developed and coherent paragraph.
2. In the next paragraph, express your reaction to Schultz’s story and points: What do you feel and/or think in response? Do
you see any connections to your own life and experiences? What lessons could we draw from Schultz? Etc….
3. Save and name your document (your family name and today’s date: 1.31.12)
4. Print it out and bring to the second half of class.

2.2.12 HW— 1. Brainstorm ideas (on paper) for your hometown story; see pp. 7-9 and 140-143 in our book;

2.16.12 HW — In preparation for exploring Cause/Effect writing, read The Upside of Dyslexia (2 pages). As you read, think
about what’s a cause, what’s an effect, or what are some results and the reasons for them.

2.21.12 — In class and MLL assignment:

HW for Thursday: Read pp. 82-84 in our textbook and DO Activity #1 on p. 84.
2.23.12 — HW for Tuesday: 1) Do final revision of Narrative Essay (hard copy due in class, attached to previous draft);
2) Choose a topic for your Cause/Effect essay and use the attached graphic organizers (also on pp. 85-86 of our textbook)
to develop your ideas about, first, the causes, and then, the effects. Do some research if you need to learn more about
the topic or need more information. Bring both completed organizers to class.
