We here at the good ‘ol Dean of Students Office like to think of ourselves as folks who are on the cutting edge of what’s new – what’s hot – what’s happening!
This next video…well, it might not be hot…but it is new, and it certainly is… happening…on some level. Instead of a regular-type blog today, I’m gonna come clean and tell y’all that I am out straight with midterms and papers this week – and let’s face it, you probably are too. You don’t have the time to read a long blog. So, instead, I present to you this video, which has been on replay in our office for the past few days. Whether or not that makes us DOS staffers masochists, or just really crazy, remains to be seen. But…enjoy.
Good luck getting it out of your head. Have fun jammin’ to this while you study in Mugar!
How did it get to be mid-October already? As your semester is flying by and work is piling on, i'm sure you're looking for as many ways to procrastinate as possible… or maybe that's just me. That being said, as a broke college student, I've recently discovered a new webpage that's quickly becoming my new favorite thing.
Money Break is an online game show that happens daily, Monday through Friday, at 1pm EST. The show's hosts (who might look familiar… cough cough Real World MTV!) ask questions about a sponsor, you Google the company, answer the questions, and boom- you can win. Simple as that.
I'm going to try my luck today- will you? Check out the game here, and good luck! Be sure to let the FYI team if you give it a try.
Talk to you soon, BU. Hopefully I'll be a thousand dollars richer!
From October 18 through 21, students, alumni and staff from all of the institutions will go to Cradles to Crayons to help put together packages of school supplies, clothing, and other necessities for students at local elementary schools.
Volunteers will staff two shifts per day at Cradles to Crayons from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.
So go help out, make a difference, and inspire young students to follow in your scholastic footsteps!
First things first: I cannot believe it's taken me this many months to work a song title into a blog post. I'm kind of disappointed in me.
Now, on to my blog. As I'm sure many of you know, Boston University has a university-wide alert system that gets activated in the case of an emergency on campus. Ringing true to our blog title, here is your FYI of the day - tomorrow, October 12th, BU is going to be conducting an university-wide test of the system.
No, she doesn't run the University Alert System, but...I like to pretend that she does.
It's something that the U.S. Department of Education requires us to do annually. All students should have provided BU with an up-to-date e-mail address and cell phone number. Tomorrow, at 10:50 AM, don't be surprised if you get a few texts, a phone call, and an email from the BU Alert system. (Anyone who's ever had a clingy ex-girlfriend has probably been through something similar.)
If for some reason you don't get contacted, and don't receive the test messages tomorrow, you should go ahead and email swn@bu.edu with the message “Failed to receive SWN alert.”
Oh, and if your Wednesday schedule finds you in a class with a professor who's really strict about cell phones going off, you might want to put your phone on vibrate around 10:50 AM. Although...you never know...their phone might go off, too.
(Pssst...if you want any additional information about the System Test, BU Today has a great article up.)
You might want to clean off your desk and find that card.
From twitter to facebook and even on our blog, rants and raves about how much the MBTA fails is a common theme in Boston. What few of us know, however, is that the CharlieCard you (may or may not) use can get you DISCOUNTS around the city. WHAT!? I know. Finally, something that card is actually good for.
Listed in the CharlieCard Discount Book are over 150 special offers you can get simply by flasing your pass. Discounts include dining, shopping, museums and even heatlh/fitness locations. There's a lot more, so be sure to check it out.
But let's be honest, Terriers, we're not going to carry around a little discount book everyday, so there's a new phone application (called "Vidappe") that will alert you as you get close to them. A little freaky, but cool nonetheless, am I right?
So, for all you iPhone and Android users, be sure to download Vidappe and start using your discounts. For us blackberry users.... we'll have to do some reading....
Time to STOP being polite, and START GETTING REAL.
That's right terriers, THE REAL WORLD 27 is casting AT A LOCATION NEAR YOU.
So get ready to strut your stuff at Tommy Doyle's Pub and Restaurant from 10am-5pm on October 8th! (Must be 20-24 years of age). Tell that funny story that makes you unique, encourage the casting directors to fall in love with your witty personality, or just the one that will get you on the show (whatever works- it's Hollywood baby! Sort of).
You know you want to have as much fun as they're having!
So if you're over your current roommate, now's your chance to get 8 more! Bring a valid photo ID and a recent photo (you know, all of those artsy screenshots you've been getting) down to Tommy Doyle's Pub and Restaurant Saturday and get a Terrier to show the world, the REAL world.
iDon't know if any of you watched the Apple conference today - iBet those COM kids among you did - but, like me, you were all probably a little shocked to hear that Apple is NOT releasing a new iPhone5.
Excited?
Personally, iWas as little disappointed to not see a new phone, but that was nothing compared to my Twitter feed. You would have thought that someone had come along and told them that all iPhones were being permanently recalled or something. Talk about outrage! iKnow you're all a tad annoyed, but seriously - take what you can get! It's still supposed to be seven times faster, and have a better camera - and let's be honest, it'll give you all a little longer to perfect those iPhone5 jokes. And come on, how cool does 'Siri' sound?
No, not her...although let's be honest, she'll probably have one before any of us.
So, BU, what are your thoughts? We asked Dean Elmore, and he says that, even with the cracked face on his iPhone, he's all set with his iPhone4. Will y'all be upgrading? Throw us your thoughts in the comments section!
Maybe it's just me, but I found myself wondering how the first month of classes has somehow flown by. With midterms fast approaching, I found myself doing anything and everything to avoid studying or doing any type of work at all. In the office today, Julia and I found this little gem of a YouTube video.
I hope this motivates you to "get your girl swag on" ...and then, keep reading your textbook. This is slightly disturbing.
So...it's been a rough couple of days. I don't know about you guys, but as a life-long New Englander and fervent member of Red Sox Nation...well. I'm sure you've all heard by now.
WHHHYYYYY???
So I've been sitting in a funk, moping over the Wildcard Debacle...and then I remembered something that really cheered me up - starting this weekend, I can turn my sports fanaticism towards another avenue....BU Hockey, and specifically, the BU Women's Hockey Team!
Last year, the Lady Terriers had a big year, and this year, their seventh as a varsity program, I've heard tell that they are once again gunning for a Hockey East Tournament...and they intend to make an appearance at the NCAA title game for the second year in a row.
You can be there from the beginning for what is sure to be a triumphant season- the first game is tonight at 7 PM in BU's Walter Brown Arena and the second is Saturday at 3 PM in the same place. Want tickets? Just show up at the door! It's that easy. We hope to see you there to support the team!
GOOOOO TERRIERS!!! (And, well...there's always next year, Sox fans...sigh.)
Mmmm... I'm so happy as I sit in the office, drinking my black Nantucket blend coffee (whatuuup, Keurig). Yes, I drink coffee everyday, but something about having a national holiday makes the indulgence feel that much better. Or maybe it's just the caffeine surging through my veins.
We here at the Dean of Students want to know where are you drinking your coffee today? Home? Starbucks? Dunkin Donuts? And what exactly are you drinking? Is it Hazelnut? French Vanilla? Pumpkin? Maybe you added some Kahlua? Tell us!
And for all you supreme addicts out there... I have some epic news...
You know the GSU starbucks? You might want to head over there for your afternoon fix. Even though the menu doesn't list it, they now serve the TRENTA SIZE. That's right. As if you didn't look silly enough with your over-sized venti iced watchamacallits.
Keep being you, BU, and go caffeinate!
