In the Mediterranean of yesteryear, the wine flowed in moderation and typically only with meals. Some women drank rarely, if at all. Staunch Mediterranean Diet fans believe moderate wine can help reduce the risk of heart disease. The latest advice from the USDA also admits that moderate alcohol sipping, not just from wine, may help keep the heart ticking … for some people. However, even a daily drink can slightly increase the risk of breast cancer in women. While The Traditional Healthy Mediterranean Diet Pyramid recommends wine in moderation, it is also considered optional and should be avoided if consuming it would put a person or others at risk, such as when pregnant or driving. The USDA defines moderation as no more than a five-ounce glass of wine daily for women and up to 2 glasses (10 ounces) daily for men.
