Hey guys! First of all, congrats on being interested in COM, and hopefully we’ll see you here on campus next year. My name is Jon Mayer (and no, I’m not waiting on the world to change). I’m from Carlisle, a little town about 30 minutes northwest of Boston, in the kind of area where you can’t see your neighbors from your house because of all the trees. I’m an advertising major here at BU’s College of Communication, with an intended minor in Computer Science in CAS. I love the advertising industry, and am especially interested in advertising/brand marketing for the video game and entertainment industries.
In high school, I had no idea I was interested in COM until I looked into applying to BU and realized that I had to choose a school to apply into. One of these just happened to be the College of Communication. “Hmm,” I said, “I wonder what that is?” I was an avid actor and athlete during high school, and I did equally well in all my classes, but I really had no clue what I wanted to do at this point. However, after investigating the range of options at COM, and noticing the combination of theoretical background and hands-on, experiential learning that the school focused on, I was certain of where I was headed. From that point on, I’ve been in love with advertising. My goal is to one day combine my passions, and as I said before, work in advertising for the video game industry.
Here at BU, you’re probably going to find me in the dining hall, because the food is just that good. But when I’m not busy consuming some delicious dining options in the cafe, I’m singing with The BosTones, my co-ed a cappella group, working on one of BU’s student theatrical productions as either an actor or a techie, or roaming the streets of the Back Bay with my friends talking in a funny accent and occasionally bursting out into song and dance.
Other than that, there’s not much to know about me. I play the guitar and the ukelele, I’m unhealthily addicted to coffee, I don’t care about sports as much as I probably should (though don’t expect me to ever be caught rooting for anyone other than the Patriots/Celtics/Red Sox), I love video games, particularly FPSs, and I enjoy dressing snazzily.
I hope you enjoy exploring the wonderful city of Boston, and that you end up choosing COM. Good luck on your acceptances!
